Yarn: Knit Picks Brava Sport Weight 273 yards/ 100 grams. All 100 grams will be used for an adult hat.

Hook: 6 mm Tunisian hook

Notions: Tapestry needle

Skill Level: Intermediate

Size: Adult (22 inches)

Gauge: 12 stitches from the stitch pattern x 6 rows = 4 inches

Notes: First loop on the hook always counts as a TKS

Special Stitches:

  • TPS (Tunisian Purl stitch): (forward pass) Place yarn in front of your work, insert your hook into the left vertical bar of the st below, yo and pull your yarn through. (Return pass): follow the instructions in the pattern.
  • TKS (Tunisian Knit stitch): (Forward pass)working with the yarn behind your work, insert your hook between the vertical bars below the horizontal bars in the st below, yo, pull the yarn through, keep your loop on the hook.(Return pass): follow the instructions in the pattern.
  • TK3tog (Tunisian knit 3 together): (forward pass): working with the yarn behind your work insert your hook through the left vertical loops of the next 3 stitches, yo, pull the yarn through , keep your loop on the hook. (return pass): follow the instructions in the pattern.
  • Yo (yarn over): (Forward pass) put the yarn over the hook from back to front, (Return pass): treat this as a loop on the return pass
  • M1 (make 1 stitch): put yarn in front of your work, insert hook into stitch indicated, pull up a loop. (an extra stitch is added from the yarn in front)

FoundationRow: (Forward pass): Make a slip knot with a long tail, Ch12, insert hook into each ch and pull up a loop for a total of 12 loops on the hook,

(Return pass): Yo, pull through 1 loop, {yo, pull through 2 loops} repeat {to} until you have 1 loop left.

Row 1: (Forward pass): TKS in each st for a total of 12 loops

(Return pass): Yo, pull through 1 loop, {yo, pull through 2 loops} repeat {to} until you have 1 loop left.

Row 2: (Forward pass): TPS in each st for a total of 12 loops

(Return pass): Yo, pull through 1 loop, {yo, pull through 2 loops} repeat {to} until you have 1 loop left.

Row 3 & 4: (Forward pass): TKS in each st for a total of 12 loops

Hat body

Row 1: Ch 1, turn your work so the back of work is facing towards you and you are working in the first st of each row. Sl st through the front post of each first st of the row. 100 sl sts

Row 2: (Forward pass): Ch 1, turn (counts as first loop), [insert hook into the next sl st, and pull up a loop] 9 xs, {M1 in the next sl st, [insert hook into the next sl st, and pull up a loop] x 19 } repeat {to} 5 times, M1, insert hook into the next sl st, and pull up a loop in the last 9 sl sts. 105 loops

(Return pass): Yo, pull through 1 loop, {yo, pull through 2 loops} repeat {to} until you have 1 loop left.

Row 3: (Forward pass): {Yo, TKS3tog, yo, TKS 2xs}, repeat {to} 19 times, yo, TKS3tog, yo, TKS in the last 4 sts. 105 loops

Continue repeating rows 2-12 until you have 8 1/2 inches or you have your desired length.

Decreasing the Crown

Row 1:(Forward pass): {TKS3tog, TKS 2xs}, repeat {to} 19 times, TKS3tog, TKS in the last 4 sts. 45 (51, 57, 63) loops

(Return pass): Yo, pull through 1 loop, {yo, pull through 2 loops} repeat {to} until you have 1 loop left.

Row 2:(Forward pass): TKS2tog, sl st just made into beginning st, (beginning TKS3tog just made), {TKS3gog} repeat {to} 18 times, for a total of 21 loops

Row 3: Insert hook through the vertical lines of each stitch, yo and pull back through all the stitches. (This takes some patience I know), Tug the stitches together to form the top of the hat, secure with 2 ch sts, and Finish off.

With your long tail and tapestry needle, sew up the hat. Weave in your ends. Block as needed.
