Materials

Dk / weight 3 yarn I used Paintbox Simply DK in Slate Green for the background colour (276 metres per 100g) and various different colours for the animals.

4ply yarn in black and white for the eyes on the 4, 5 and 6.5”

3 and 4 mm crochet hooks

blo = back loop only (crochet into the back loop of the stitch

Loop stitch 

Gauge

9 dc x 4 rows = 2” x 2”

Eyes

If making small, medium and large use a 3mm hook and black 4 ply yarn.

If making extra large use dk black yarn and 4mm hook

Round 1: In a magic circle, ch1, 6 sc, slst to the first and pull tight. (6)

Fasten off with a long end for sewing, sew one white line for small, medium and large and two white lines for extra large.

Hedgehog

The hedgehog is made different as follows:

Small 4” / Medium 5” square

Starting with black 4ply

Round 1: Make a magic circle, ch1,5 sc into the circle, slst to the first and pull tight. (5)

Change to beige

Round 2-3: ch1, sc all. (5)

Round 4: ch1, [2 sc] in the first, sc 1, [2 sc] in the next 3. (9)

Round 5: ch1, *[2 sc] in each stitch* slst to the first stitch. (18)

Round 6: ch2, 1 hdc in the same stitch, [2 hdc] in the next, *hdc 1, [2 hdc] in the next* repeat to the end, slst to the first stitch. (27)

Round 7: ch2, 1 hdc in the same stitch, hdc 1, [2 hdc] in the next, hdc 2, [hdc 1, change to brown, hdc again in the last stitch], keep using brown, *hdc 2, [2 hdc] in the next* repeat to the end, slst to the first stitch. (36) Turn

Round 8: ch1, *sc 1, tr 1* x 14, tr 1, change to beige, sc 7, slst to the last stitch. (36) Turn

With the right side facing, join main colour in first brown stitch

Round 9: ch3, 1 dc in the same, ch 1, [2 dc] in the next stitch, hdc 1, sc 5, hdc 1, *[2 dc] in the next, ch1, [2 dc] in the next, hdc 1, sc 5, hdc 1* repeat twice more, slst to the first stitch, then slst to the ch1 corner space to start the next round. (44)

Round 10: [ch3, 1 dc, ch 2, 2 dc] in the same stitch for the first corner, dc 11, *[2 dc, ch2, 2 dc], dc 11* repeat twice more, slst to the first stitch, then slst to the ch2 corner space to start the next round. (60)

(square should measure approx 4”)

Round 11: [ch3, 1 dc, ch 2, 2 dc] in the same stitch for the first corner, dc 15, *[2 dc, ch2, 2 dc], dc 15* repeat twice more, slst to the first stitch, then slst to the ch2 corner space to start the next round. (76)

FEET

Make two using beige

In a magic circle, ch1, sc 2, hdc 3, sc 2, slst to the first and pull tight. Fasten off with a long end for sewing.

Large 6.5” square

Starting with black

Round 1: Make a magic circle, ch1, sc into the circle, slst to the first and pull tight. (5)

Change to beige
