The quantity of sts is multipled 30 sts and 12-row repeat.

For the sample, cast on 42 sts (= 30 sts for the ornament + 10 sts for the background from both sides + 2 selvedge sts). Slip the 1st selvedge st as knit st, make the last selvedge st as purl. In further description selvedge sts aren't included.

1st row: knit;

2nd and all the wrong-side rows: purl;

3rd row: 5 knit sts, transfer 5 sts to the auxilary needle in front of work, 5 knit sts, 5 knit sts from the auxilary needle, 10 knit sts, transfer 5 sts to the auxilary needle behind work, 5 knit sts, 5 knit sts from the auxilary needle, 5 knit sts;

5th and 7th rows: knit;

9th row: 10 knit sts, transfer 5 sts to the auxilary behind work, 5 knit sts, 5 knit sts from the auxilary needle, transfer 5 sts to the auxilary needle in front of work, 5 knit sts, 5 knit sts from the auxilary needle;

11th row: knit.

Repeat from 1st to 12th rows.
