You’ll need:

13 Balls Berroco Blakstone Tweed (50 grs), #2602 Steamers;

36” Length circular knitting needle, size 7 (4.50 mm);

Straight knitting needles, size 7 (4.50 mm);

6 St markers;

1 St holder.

Size: Approximately 67” around lower edge x 16” long down center back, not including hood)

Gauge: 24 sts = 4”; 25 rows = 4” in k1, p1 ribbing

Note

This cape is worked in 3 sections. The 2 fronts will be worked straight, folding up lower edges for pockets, then shaped at top to match back.

Instructions

Back

With circular needle, cast on 265 sts. Don’t join.

Row 1 (RS): K1, * p1, k1, rep from * across.

Row 2: P1, * k1, p1, rep from * across. Rep these 2 rows twice more (6 rows total), end on WS.

Dec Row (RS): (K1, p1) 21 times, k3 tog, place marker, p1, (k1, p1) 3 times, place marker, k3 tog, p1, (k1, p1) 36 times, k3 tog, place marker, p1, k1, p1, place marker, k3 tog, p1, (k1, p1) 36 times, k3 tog, place marker, p1, (k1, p1) 3 times, place marker, k3 tog, (p1, k1) 21 times – 253 sts.

Work even in rib pattern for 5 rows.

Dec Row 2 (RS): Continue in rib as established, work to 3 sts before marker, k 3tog, sm, rib to marker, sm, k 3tog, rib to 3 sts before marker, k 3tog, sm, rib to marker, sm, k 3tog rib to 3sts before marker, k 3tog, sm, rib to marker, sm, k 3tog, rib to end.

Working in ribbing as established, continue to dec 12 sts in this manner every 6th row 11 times more, then every 4th row 5 times, end on WS – 49 sts. Bind off in ribbing.

Left Front

With straight needles, cast on 79 sts. Work even in ribbing same as back for 10”, end on WS. Mark beg and end of last row. Work even until piece measures 25” from beg, end on WS. Mark end of last row for beg of yoke.

Shape Yoke: Row 1 (dec row) (RS): (K1, p1) 4 times, place marker, k3 tog, * p1, k1, rep from * across – 77 sts.

Row 2: Work even.

Row 3: Rep Row 1 – 75 sts.

Rows 4 – 6: Work even. Rep these 6 rows15 times more, then rep Rows 1 and 2 once more – 29 sts.

Shape Neck: Next Row (RS): (K1, p1) 4 times, sl marker, k3 tog, work in ribbing as established to last 7 sts, k3 tog, (p1, k1) twice – 23 sts. Continue to work yoke decs as before and AT THE SAME TIME, dec 2 sts at neck edge in this manner every 4th row 3 times more. Note: As you decrease, there will be a point where you will have to drop the marker and work decs closer to, then finally at the edge. When all decs have been completed, end on WS. Fasten off last st.

Right Front

Work same as left front until piece measures 25” from beg, end on WS – 79 sts. Mark beg of last row for beg of yoke.

Shape Yoke: Dec Row (RS): (K1, p1) 34 times, k3 tog, place marker, (p1, k1) 4 times – 77 sts. Complete to correspond to left front, reversing all shaping. Work neck decs at beg of RS rows as (k1, p1) twice, k3 tog.

Finishing

Sew shaped yoke edges of fronts (above last markers) to side edges of back.

Hood: Left Neck Section: With straight needles, cast on 2 sts.

Rows 1 and 2: P1, k1.

Row 3 (RS): Cast on 2 sts, k1, p1 – 4 sts.

Row 4: (P1, k1) twice.

Row 5: Cast on 2 sts, (k1, p1) twice – 6 sts. Continue in this manner to cast on 2 sts at beg of every RS row 5 times more, working cast-on sts into ribbing – 16 sts. Work 1 row even. Cast on 3 sts at beg of the next RS row – 19 sts. Work 1 row even, end on WS. Break off yarn and sl sts to st holder.

Right Neck Section: With straight needles, cast on 2 sts.

Row 1 (RS): K1, p1.

Row 2 (WS): Cast on 2 sts, k1, p1 – 4 sts.

Row 3: (K1, p1) twice.

Row 4: Cast on 2 sts, (k1, p1) twice – 6 sts. Continue in this manner to cast on 2 sts at beg of every WS row, 5 times more, working cast-on sts into ribbing – 16 sts. Work 1 row even. Cast on 3 sts at beg of the next WS row, working cast-on sts into ribbing, end on WS – 19 sts.

Next Row (RS): Work 19 sts of right front neck section, with RS facing, pick up and k55 sts across bound-off edges of back and fronts, then work 19 sts of left front neck section from holder – 93 sts.

Next Row (WS): P1, (k1, p1) 22 times, place marker, k1, p1, k1, place marker, p1, (k1, p1) 22 times. Work even in ribbing as established for 8 rows, end on WS.

Inc Row (RS): Work to 1 st before first marker, M1, p1, M1, sl marker, k1, p1, k1, sl marker, M1, p1, M1, work to end – 97 sts. Rep this inc every 8th row 7 times more, working M1’s into ribbing – 125 sts. Dropping markers, work even in ribbing as established until piece measures 12” from beg, end on WS. Bind off. Fold hood in half and sew top seam. Sew slanted edges of front sections of hood to left and front neck edges. Fold up lower edges of fronts to RS at markers and sew side edges together, forming pockets.
