The Details
As usual, the body of this pattern is made in the same style as my Ragdoll patterns; separate pieces worked in flat rows and then joined together to give them that unique 2-D look.
The finished measurements are approximately 10cm/4″ from top to bottom.
Notes:
- The panels are worked from the bottom up in flat rows. As you are working the panels, you will notice that it will start to curve downward at the ends because of the increases; this is normal! Keep going and the rows will even out around row 8.
- The hair is worked from the bottom up in flat rows. It is worked in two separate pieces which are then joined as you go.
- The back panel incorporates a small amount of colour work for the hair. When changing colours, insert your hook into the stitch for the last stitch of Colour X and pull up a loop. Then, with Colour Y, yarn over and complete the stitch by pulling through both loops with Colour Y. Drop working yarn in Colour X and continue with Colour Y. Pick your Colour X yarn back up again when you need it. Always drop your yarn on the wrong side of your panel. For the front panel, when working an odd-numbered row (row 1, 3, 5, etc), the right side of the panel will be facing you. When working an even-numbered row, the wrong side will be facing you. This is reversed for the back panel.
- The face is stitched onto the front panel before assembly.
- The panels and hair are then stacked on top of each other and single crocheted together to join them and then stuffed.
- The hair ribbon is worked along a chain and wrapped around the hair and stitched in place. The leaf is worked around a starting chain in fine weight yarn.

Assembly:
- Using black crochet thread, stitch happy eyes onto the front panel between rows 7-8. The eyes should be 3 sts in from each side and each eye will span about 4 sts wide and 1 st high. Use black sewing thread and a sewing needle to stitch them in place.
- Using pink yarn, stitch a nose between the eyes at row 6, spanning 2 sts. Stitch around the sts several times to create a small bump.
- Using black crochet thread, stitch a mouth onto the front body panel spanning two sts diagonally over row 4.
- Stack the panels as follows: back panel on bottom, front panel in the middle, hair on top. Make sure all the yarn ends of the panels are facing inward so that they are hidden. Match up all rows with the front/right side facing you. Starting near the top on the left side of the bun, begin attaching the panels together by inserting your hook through all three panels and single crocheting around the outside edge of the panels starting in grey (see photos below). Once you’ve crocheted down to the edge of the hair, switch to MC yarn. Now you will be crocheting through only two panels (the front and back). Continue crocheting down around the bottom and part way up the other side, switching back to grey when you reach the hair on the other side; you will now be crocheting through three panels again! Crochet up to the base of the bun. Stop here and stuff. Insert stuffing into the space between the front and back panels (i.e. NOT the space between the hair and front panel). Continue crocheting up and around the bun, stuffing as you go. Slst to beginning stitch to close and weave ends.
- Wrap the ribbon around the base of the bun from back to front so that the ends overlap on the front/side of the bun. Use the yarn ends to stitch the ribbon in place.
- Use yarn ends of the leaf to stitch the leaf embellishment to the hair, above the ribbon.
- Apply blush to the cheeks if desired.
