(A = light color, B = dark color)
Crochet hook size G, or size needed for gauge
Gauge: Gauge: first 3 rounds = about 3"
Finished size: 7"
To work V-stitch (V st): dc, ch 2, dc
With color A, ch4; join with a sl st to form ring
Round 1: Ch 4 to count as first dc and ch 1; (dc, ch 1) in ring 7 times; join with a sl st to the 3rd ch of beginning ch 4. - 8 dc and 8 ch 1 spaces. Fasten off.
Round 2: Join color B with a sl st in any ch 1 sp, ch 3, 2dc in the same sp; (ch 1, 3 dc in the next ch 1 sp) 7 times; ch 1, join with a sl st to top of beginning ch 3. Fasten off color B.
Round 3: Join color A with a sc in the center dc of any 3dc group; ** *working in front of the next ch 1 sp, yo and insert hook in the dc of round 1 directly below the same ch 1 sp, complete V st in this dc;* (sc, ch 1, sc) in the center dc of the next 3dc group on round 2** Repeat from ** to ** 6 times. Repeat from * to * once; sc in the same st as the first sc, ch 1, join with a sl st to the first sc. Fasten off color A.
Round 4: Join color B with a sc in the ch 2 sp of any V st (V st, sc, ch 2) in the same space; *(sc, V st, sc, ch 2) in the ch 2 sp of the next V st* Repeat from * to * 6 times; join with a sl st to the first sc. Fasten off color B.
Round 5: Join color A with a sc in the ch 2 sp of any V st; ** * yo, insert hook into the next ch 1 sp between the sc’s of round 3, complete dc (this dc will go around the ch 1 space of round 3 & the ch 2 sp of round 4), ch 3, dc in the same sp;* (sc, ch 2, sc) in the ch 2 sp of the next V st on round 4** Repeat from ** to ** 6 times, then repeat from * to * once; sc in the same V st as the first sc, ch 2, join with a sl st to the first sc. Fasten off color A.
Round 6: Join color B with a sc in any ch 3 sp, (dc, V st, dc, sc, ch 3) in the same sp; *(sc, dc, V st, dc, sc, ch 3) in the next ch 3 sp* Repeat from * to * 6 times; join with a sl st to the first sc. Fasten off color B.
Round 7: Join color A with a sc in the ch 2 sp of any V st, ch 1, ** * (dc, ch 1) 3 times in the next ch 2 sp between the sc’s of round 5 (these dc’s will go around both the ch 2 sp of round 5 and the ch 3 sp of round 6);* (sc, ch 1) twice in the ch 2 space of the next V st** Repeat from ** to ** 6 times, then repeat from * to * once; sc in the same V st as first sc, ch 1, join with a sl st to the first sc. Do not fasten off.
Round 8: Sc in the next ch 1 sp, ** *ch 3, sc in the next ch 1 sp, ch 5, sc in the next ch 1 sp, ch 3, sc in the next ch 1 sp,* (ch 2, sc in the next ch 1 sp) 7 times** Repeat from ** to ** 2 times, then repeat from * to * once; (ch 2, sc in the next ch 1 sp) 6 times; ch 2, join with a sl st to the first sc. Fasten off color A.
Round 9: Join color B with a sl st in any ch 5 sp, ch 4, work 2 trc in the same space; work 2 dc in the next ch 3 sp, work 2 hdc in the next ch 2 sp, ** *(work 2 sc in the next ch 2 sp) 5 times; work 2 hdc in the next ch 2 sp, work 2 dc in the next ch 3 sp,* work 5 trc in the next ch 5 sp, work 2 dc in the next ch 3 sp, work 2 hdc in the next ch 2 sp* Repeat from * to * twice, then repeat from * to * once; work 2 trc in the same space as beginning trc’s; join with a sl st to the top of the beginning ch 4. Check size. If square measures 7", fasten off.
Round 10: (Fudging round, if needed) Sc in each st around, working 3 sc in the center trc of each corner OR dc in ea st around, working 5 dc in the center trc of each corner. Fasten off.
