MATERIALS

  • Size 3 Crochet Thread, 100% mercerised cotton, 50g/137m/150yds
  • Shade: Rose x 10 balls

  • 3.5mm hook
  • TENSION

    Work one strip to measure approximately 7.5cm/3in wide using 3.5mm hook, or size required to obtain tension.

    MEASUREMENTS

    Finished shawl measures approximately 51cm/20in wide and 153cm/64in long.

    FIRST STRIP

    FIRST HALF

    10ch, join with sl st to form a ring.

    Rnd 1: 3ch (counts as tr), 17tr in ring, join with sl st in third ch of beg 3ch, turn - 18tr.

    Row 2: 4ch (counts as tr, 1ch), (tr in next tr, 1ch) seven times, in next tr work (tr, 5ch, tr), 1ch, turn.

    Row 3: (4dc, 5ch, 4dc) in next 5ch-sp, * (dc, 4ch, dc) in next 1ch-sp, 2dc in next 1ch-sp; rep from * once more, (dc, 4ch, dc) in next 1ch-sp, dc in next 1ch-sp, 7ch, turn, miss next 4ch-sp and next 2dc, sl st in next dc, 3ch, turn, 8tr in 7ch-sp, 3ch, sl st in same sp, dc in next 1ch-sp that was previously worked in, (dc, 4ch, dc) in next 1ch-sp, 2 dc in next 1ch-sp, 5ch, turn.

    Row 4: Miss next 4ch-sp and next 2dc, tr in next 3ch-sp, (1ch, tr in next tr) eight times, 1ch, tr in next 3ch-sp, 5ch, miss next 4ch-sp and next 2dc, sl st in next dc, 1ch, turn.

    Rep rows 3 & 4 until piece measures 82cm/32in.

    Last Row: (4dc, 5ch, 4dc) in next 5ch-sp, *(dc, 4ch, dc) in next 1ch-sp, 2dc in next 1ch-sp; rep from * four times, (dc, 4ch, dc) in next 1ch-sp, working along opposite side of strip, ** (4dc, 5ch, 4dc) in next large ch-sp, (dc, 4ch, dc) in next smaller ch-sp, rep from ** ending with (4dc, 5ch, 4dc) to beg of strip. Fasten off.

    SECOND HALF

    With wrong side of work facing, join yarn with sl st to top of 3ch turning ch of last sp on row 2 of First Half.

    Row 2: (1ch, tr in next st) nine times, 5ch, sl st in third ch of beg 3ch of previously worked first half, 1ch, turn.

    Row 3: (Dc, 4ch, dc) in next 1 ch-sp, 2dc in next 1 ch-sp; rep from * once, (dc, 4ch, dc) in next 1ch-sp, dc in next 1ch-sp, 7ch, turn, miss next 4ch-sp and next 2dc, sl st in next dc, 3ch, turn, 8tr in next 7ch-sp, 3ch, sl st in same sp, dc in next 1ch-sp that was previously worked in (dc, 4ch, dc) in next 1 ch-sp, 2dc in next 1 ch-sp, 5ch, turn.

    Row 4: Work as for row 4 of First Half. Repeat rows 3 & 4 as for First Half until piece measures same as First Half, approximately 82cm/32in.

    Last Row: (4dc, 5ch, 4dc) in next 5ch-sp, *(dc, 4ch, dc) in next 1 ch-sp, 2dc in next 1 ch-sp; rep from * four times, (dc, 4ch, dc) in next 1ch-sp; working along opposite side of strip, ** (4dc, 5ch, 4dc) in next large ch-sp, (dc, 4ch, dc) in next smaller ch-sp, rep from **, ending with (4dc, 5ch, 4dc) to beg of strip. End with sl st in base of previously worked st of First Half. Fasten off.

    SECOND STRIP

    FIRST HALF

    10ch, join with si st to form a ring. Work same as First Half of First Strip to last row.

    Last Row: (4dc, 5ch, 4dc) in next 5ch-sp, * (dc, 4ch, dc) in next 1ch-sp, 2dc in next 1ch-sp; rep from * four times, (dc, 4ch, dc) in next 1ch-sp, 4dc in next 1ch-sp, 2ch, hold previous strip with right side facing and last row at top, working along long edge of previous strip, join with sl st in first 5ch-sp on right edge of strip, 2ch, 4dc in same 1ch-sp on working strip, (dc, 4ch, dc) in next ch-sp * 4dc in next sp, 2ch, miss next 4ch-sp on previous strip, join with sl st in next 5ch-sp on previous strip, 2ch, 4dc in same ch-sp on working strip**, (dc, 4ch, dc) in next working strip, repeat from * , ending at **, sl st into beg ch of previously worked rnd. Fasten off.

    SECOND HALF

    Row 2: With wrong side of work facing, join yarn with si st in top of 3ch turning ch of First Half, (1ch, tr in next st) nine times, 5ch, sl st in third ch of beg 3ch of rnd 2, 1ch, turn.

    Row 3: Work as for First Strip, Second Half, making sure to join to the previous strip at the corresponding 5ch-sp by working 4dc in 5ch-sp, 2ch, sl st in 5ch of previous strip, 2ch, 4dc in same sp on working strip.

    Row 4: Miss next 4ch-sp and next 2dc, tr in next 3ch-sp, (1ch, tr in next sp) nine times, 5ch, miss next 4ch-sp and next 2dc, sl st in next dc, 1ch, turn.

    Rep rows 3 & 4 until piece measures same as Second Half of First Strip to last rnd.

    Last Row: Repeat last row of Second Half of First Strip. Fasten off. Work as many strips as will be necessary to have the piece measure about 51cm/20in wide, following the instructions for the Second Strip.
