  • chain = ch
  • sc - single crochet
  • hdc - half double crochet
  • sl st - slip stitch
  • st(s) - stitch(s)
  • sp - space
  • YO - yarn over hook
  • dc3 cluster - double crochet three cluster (see special stitches)

Special Stitches

  • dc3 cluster - YO, insert hook in st, YO, pull up loop, YO, pull through 2 loops, (YO, insert hook in same st, YO, pull up loop, YO, pull through 2 loops) twice, YO, pull through all 4 loops on hook, ch1.

Pattern Notes

  • I recommend that you weave in the tail ends as you go because it will make working the rounds easier.

Instructions

  • Foundation ring - Color A, ch4, join with a sl st.

  • Round 1 - Color A. Ch2 (does not count as a st), 16 hdc into ring. Join with sl st into top of first hdc, ch1, cut yarn, and fasten off. = 16 hdc

  • Round 2 - Color B. Sl st into top of any hdc of previous round. ch3, dc3 cluster in same sp as ch3, ch3, sl st into same st, sl st into next st. *(ch3, dc3 cluster, in next st, ch3, sl st in same st as dc3 cluster), sl st into next st, repeat from * 6 more times, sl st into base of first ch3, ch1, cut yarn, fasten off. = 8 petals.

  • Round 3 - Color C. Sl st into top of any dc3 cluster. Ch1 (counts as sc), ch5, sc in top of next dc3 cluster, *ch5, sc into top of next dc3 cluster, repeat from * 5 more times, ch5, sl st into first ch1. = 8 x ch5 sps, 8 x sc.

  • Round 4 - Sl st into ch5 sp. Ch3 (counts as dc), 2dc, ch2, 3dc in same ch5 sp. Ch3, sc into next ch5 sp, ch3, *(3dc, ch2, 3dc) in next ch5 sp, ch3, sc in next ch5 sp, ch3, repeat from * 2 more times, sl st in top of first ch3. = 18 dc, 4 sc, 8 x ch3 sps, and 4 x ch2 sps

  • Round 5 - Sl st into next 2 sts, sl st in ch2 sp. Ch3 (counts as a dc), 3 dc, ch2, 3 dc in same ch2 sp. 3 hdc in each of the next 2 ch3 sps. *(3dc, ch2, 3dc) in next ch2 sp, then 3 hdc in the next 2 ch3 sps, repeat from * 2 more times, sl st into top of first ch3, cut yarn and fasten off. = 24 dc, 24 hdc, 4 x ch2 sps.

Notes

FINISHING: Once you have completed the granny square, cut the yarn from the ball leaving a 6-inch (15 cm), and pull it through the last stitch. Use a darning needle to weave in the loose ends.
