Materials:

  • Size G, 4.25 mm crochet hook
  • Size 3 cotton yarn, I used Yarn Bee Sugarwheel Cotton Solids in “Mustard Seed”. 1 skein, 5 oz./142 grams/335 yards (about 1 1/2 skeins needed)
  • Tapestry needle

Abbreviations:

st(s)- stitch(es)

ch- chain

hk- hook

sc- single crochet

hdc- half double crochet

sk- skip

Gauge:

16 sts x 10 rows of pattern = 4″ square

Bag Panel (make 2):

Ch 54

Row 1: Hdc in the 3rd ch from the hk and each ch across, turn (52).

Row 2: Ch 2, hdc next 10 sts, *ch 1, sk next st, hdc next 2 sts,* repeat from * to end, turn (52).

Row 3: Ch 2, *hdc next 2 sts, hdc in ch 1 space,* repeat from * to end, turn (52).

Row 4: Ch 2, hdc in each st across, turn (52).

Row 5: Ch 2, *hdc in next 2 sts, ch 1, sk next st,* repeat from * until last 10 sts, hdc in last 10 sts, turn (52).

Row 6: Repeat row 3 (52).

Row 7: Repeat row 4 (52).

Row 8: Fasten off. Count 17 sts down, pick up a st on the 18th st and ch 2 (counts as a st). hdc next st, *ch 1, sk next st, hdc next 2 sts,* repeat from * to end, turn (35).

Row 9: Repeat row 3 (35).

Row 10: Repeat row 4 (35).

Row 11: Ch 2, *hdc next 2 sts, ch 1, sk next st,* repeat from * to end, turn (35).

Repeat rows 9-11, 6 more times, ending with row 29.

Do not turn or fasten off.

Row 30: Continue to ch 19, hdc in the third ch from the hk and next 17 chains. *Hdc next 2 sts, hdc ch 1 sp,* repeat from * to end, turn (52).

Row 31: Repeat row 4 (52).

Row 32: Repeat row 2 (52).

Row 33: Repeat row 3 (52).

Row 34: Repeat row 4 (52).

Row 35: Repeat row 5 (52).

Row 36: Repeat row 2 (52).

Fasten off, continue with the bottom portion.

Bottom:

Pick up a st on the bottom right corner and ch 1. Sc 52 sts evenly across, turn.

Rows 1-10: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn (52).

Fasten off.

Finishing of panel:

Pick up a st on the top right corner of the panel. Continue to sc evenly across the handle with 2 sc in each corner, down the front and across and up to the other side of the handle.

This will give your bag a clean finish.

Fasten off, weave in all ends.

Construction:

Cut a long piece of yarn.

Lay one panel on top of the other and with your tapestry needle whip stitch the end stitches together of the top of each handle.

Fasten off, weave in ends.

Sew down the side starting at the 27th st, across the bottom, up the other side of the bag (27 stitches down from the strap).

Fasten off, weave in ends.

Corners:

To give the bag some shape take each corner and push the tip to the inside of the bag.

Cut a long piece of yarn and with your tapestry needle sew across the diagonal of the corner about 2 inches in.

Fasten off, weave in ends.
