The motives are two-tiered.

Dense flower pettles are crochetted in back post single crochet

The elements of the upper tier are groups of tall (with multiple crochets) columns, fixed with their bases close to the center of the circle.

In addition, the puncture points of these patch elements are somewhat offset from the vertices, creating the spirals.
