Materials
1 partial skein of Caron 1lb black yarn
1 partial skein of Caron 1lb white yarn
5.5mm crochet hook
Tapestry needle
Abbreviations (US terms)
ch = Chain
sc = Single crochet
dc = Double Crochet
Notes
Used acrylic yarn for the crochet houndstooth scarf; any yarn works, but wool adds warmth.
Avoid blanket or fuzzy yarn for design clarity.
Scarf measures about 6 feet long and 6 inches wide; adjust by changing starting chains or rows.
Used black and white, but any color combination is fine.
Familiarity with the houndstooth stitch allows for creating scarves, blankets, vests, or sweaters, or working in the round for different projects.
Instructions
Scarf:
This pattern will be worked in rows longways for the scarf.
Row 1: With black yarn, ch x200 + 1 (this is the turning ch never work in this ch).
Row 2: In the second ch from the hook make a sc, then make a dc in the following ch. Continue repeating sc, dc, for the entire row. (200) Fasten off the black yarn. Join the white yarn and then ch x1 and turn.
Row 3: In the second ch from the hook make a sc, then make a dc in the following ch. Continue repeating sc, dc, for the entire row. (200) Fasten off the black yarn. Join the black yarn and then ch x1 and turn.]
Repeat rows 2 and 3 for the width of scarf you would like. I did 7 rows of white and 9 rows of black.
Scarf Fringe:
For the fringe cut 32x black yarn pieces about a foot long each. And 28x white yarn pieces again about a foot long each.
Group the black yarn in groups of 2 strands and then do the same for the white.
To attach the fringe to the crochet houndstooth scarf, pinch the 2 strands of yarn at the middle and make a loop, insert a hook into the short side of the scarf and pull the black yarn through the stitch. Then using your fingers take the ends of the fringe and loop them through the hole made and then pull tight.
Repeat the above step alternating black and white for the entire width of the scarf. Repeat on the other side of the scarf. I put 1 group of fringe per row.
After all the fringe is attached, trim the bottom so the yarn is nice and all lined up.
And now you have a crochet houndstooth scarf in black and white and most importantly you learned the crochet houndstooth stitch! Now you can also use the stitch in many more projects!
