Materials:

  • YARN:

    • 30 yards total of #4 Worsted Weight, Lion Brand Heartland or I Love This Cotton or suitable substitute
  • TOOLS:

    • US Size (G/6) 4.0 mm crochet hook or hook size that works best with your specific yarn and tension, (F/5) 3.75 mm crochet hook (or the largest crochet hook size that you can get to fit through the beads)
    • Yarn Needle, Scissors, any size wood ring up to 2”/5 cm may work best, twine, plastic pony beads, embellishments, hot or super glue

Size:

  • Dimensions (diameter): varies – 2.75-4.5”/7-11.5 cm

Stitches/Abbreviations: US Terms

  • ch – chain
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sts – stitches
  • sk – skip
  • blo – back loop only
  • sc – single crochet
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • Special Stitches:

    • 3rd loop of a hdc = a horizontal bar on the back of a hdc stitch in which to work rather than working into the top of the stitch like normal
    • Beaded sc = with working loop on the hook that fits through the bead, add a bead, complete a sc as normal by inserting hook into the st, yarn over and pull through, yarn over and pull through first loop on hook, pull through the bead and pull through the last loop on the hook

Notes:

  • This is worked in the round with the first round worked around a wood ring.
  • When joining in the round, join with a sl st to the first st in that round.
  • Beginning ch sts do not count as a st.
  • If the final wreath seems to start curling after Round 3 and will not lay flat you may need to add more stitches around the ring for Round 1 or add more increases to Round 3.

Instructions – Beaded Wreath Ornament:

Attach yarn to ring. (To do this, create your slip knot, put the slip knot on the inside of the ring, insert hook in slip knot, while holding the ring and working yarn in the same hand, grab the working yarn with your hook by yarning over, pull the working yarn through the slip knot. This attaches your yarn around the ring to begin working Round 1.)

Sizing note: If adjusting the number of sts around the ring for your size ring, work in a multiple of 4 if using 2 colors for the beaded Round 2, if using just 1 color bead for Round 2 then you can work a multiple of 2 around the ring.

Ring size suggestion for number of stitches around ring (measured from outer edges):

1-1.25”/2.5-3 cm = 20 sts

1.5”/3.5-4 cm = 24 sts

1.75”/4.5 cm = 28-32 sts

2-2.25”/5-5.75 cm = 32-36 sts

2.5-2.75”/6-7 cm = 40-44 sts

Round 1: Ch 1, work hdc around the wood ring in a multiple of 2 or 4 (see above sizing note), join.

Round 2 note: This round can be worked entirely with the smaller hook (the one that is the largest size you have that can fit through the bead) or this round can be worked with both hook sizes (it may depend on your hook sizes and tension for which option you choose). To use both hook sizes, when every regular non-beaded sc is worked you make that with the hook size you used for Round 1 and for every beaded sc you will use the smaller hook size that fits through the bead.

Round 2 (bead round): Ch 1, working in the 3rd loop of the hdc around, sc in first, beaded sc in next, *sc in next, beaded sc in next; repeat from * around, join.

Round 3: Ch 1, sc in first, sc in next, 2 sc in next, *sc in next 2, 2 sc in next; repeat from * around, if sts remain after the last repeat just sc in remaining sts, join.

Round 4: Ch 1, sk first st, in blo around, sl st in each st, join in the blo of first sl st. Fasten off and weave in ends.

FINISHING

Hanging Loop: Cut a 9”/23 cm length of yarn, twine or ribbon, thread yarn needle and attach to the back of round 3, if you have any large decorative beads you want to add to the hanging loop just slip them on both strands together before tying the knot to close the top of the hanging loop.

Other: Glue any other embellishments by using hot glue or super glue.
