A potholder worked with an original stitch and with a ruffled border.

Size : 16 cm (6 1/4 ")

Material : Worsted Weight Cotton Yarn ( we call it "Poor Cotton", but a yarn like "Sugar&Cream should be good), color A= Red, B= Dark Yellow, Hook no.4 (US=G/6);

Stitches : ch, sc,hdc, dc

Difficulty: easy

Directions

Start with A, 22 ch

1. 1 ch, sc in ea ch; 2 ch, turn

2. * sk a sc, sc in next sc, sc in skipped sc;* Repeat * to * along the row; 1 ch, turn; join B

3. sc in ea sc; 2 ch, turn

4.* sk a sc, sc in next sc, sc in skipped sc;* Repeat * to * along the row; 1 ch, turn; join a

5-20. Repeat Rows 3-4, changing color at the end of even rows. To avoid weaving a lot of thread, do not cut yarn when joining the other color, but drop it and take it again after two rows. This will be hidden by the border.

Border

1. A: sc all around making 22 sc on ea horizontal and vertical sides, and 3 sc in ea corner; join B with sl st to first sc

2. B: *(dc, 2 ch, dc) in corner sc, sc in next sc, (hdc, dc, hdc) in next sc* Repeat all around. Cut, weave in ends.

Loop : sc in corner sp, 8 ch, sc in same sp, 1 ch, turn, 8 sc in lp, join with sl st. Cut

N.B.

  • Substitute ever (also if not explicitly said) first st in a row as follows:

    • first sc with 1 ch, sc;
    • first hdc with 2 ch;
    • first dc with 3 ch;
    • first tr with 4 ch...and so on;
  • When you read "sl st to <location>", where the location is not immediately contiguous to last st, this means of course "an appropriate number of sl sts for reaching <location>".
  • Also if I do not specify it, if you lasted prev row on a st (say st1), while you must start next row in another st (say st2), make an appropriate number of sl sts to reach st2.
