Crochet Granny Stitch Potholder

Create a charming and practical potholder using the classic crochet Granny Stitch technique. Granny Stitch Potholder Pattern

Hook: H (5 mm) sized crochet hook
Size: 8 inch square
Materials: 3 ounces cotton yarn – use scrap yarns and trim as desired
1 inch plastic ring for hanging loop. I used a recycled plastic ring from a water bottle for my hanging loop in this project.

With H hook, Ch 4 and join to form ring. Or you can use a magic circle to start.

Row 1
Ch 2, (counts as 1 Hdc) in ring work 2 Hdc,
Ch 1, 3 Hdc, Ch 1, 3 Hdc, Ch1, 3 Hdc, Ch 1, Sl St to top of Ch 2. (4 corners & 4 shells made)

Row 2
With next color attach in any Ch 1 corner space.
Ch 2, 2 Hdc, Ch 1, 3 Hdc, all in the same ch 1 corner space.
*Sk next 3 Hdc, 3 Hdc, Ch 1, 3 Hdc, all in the next Ch 1 corner space.*
Repeat between * 2 more times, Sl St to top of the beginning Ch 2.

Row 3
Sl St across remaining Hdc’s to corner.
Ch 2 (counts as 1 Hdc) 2 Hdc, Ch 1, 3 Hdc, all in the corner space.
*Sk 3 Hdc, make 3 Hdc in between shells, Sk next shell, make 3 Hdc, Ch 1,
3 Hdc in corner.* Repeat 2 more times then Sl St to top of first Hdc.

Row 4-9
Continue in the established pattern until 9 rows completed for granny stitch front panel. Front panel measures 7-1/2 inches wide.

Row 1
Ch 27, Sc in 2nd chain from hook and in each st across. (26 Sc)

Row 2-28
Ch 1, turn. Sc in each st across.

Join front panel and back panel with right sides facing out. Join yarn at corner and Sc around the edges evenly working 1 Sc in each st through both layers and 2 Sc in corners. On final corner, attach a 1″ ring and Sc around the ring and join in corner space to finish off.

FO – Finish Off
Hdc – Half-Double Crochet
Sc – Single Crochet
Sl St – Slip Stitch
Sm – Same

St – Stitch
