Materials:

  • Worsted weight yarn in grey, white, black, pink, blue, and various colors for the rainbow base
  • Crochet hook (size appropriate for your yarn)
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors
  • Safety eyes
  • Fiberfill (optional for the ears and bow)

Pattern:

Pencil Holder Base:

  1. Base:
    • Using grey yarn, make a magic ring.
    • Round 1: 6 sc in ring (6).
    • Round 2: 2 sc in each stitch around (12).
    • Round 3: Sc in next stitch, 2 sc in next stitch repeat around (18).
    • Round 4: Sc in next 2 stitches, 2 sc in next stitchrepeat around (24).
    • Continue increasing evenly until the base reaches the desired diameter for the pencil holder.
  2. Body:
    • Once the base is the right size, work even rounds of sc without increasing.
    • Switch to different colors as desired to create the rainbow stripes at the bottom.
    • Continue working in sc until the holder reaches the desired height.

Cat Face:

  1. Face:
    • Using grey yarn, make a magic ring.
    • Round 1: 6 sc in ring (6).
    • Round 2: 2 sc in each stitch around (12).
    • Round 3: Sc in next stitch, 2 sc in next stitch repeat around (18).
    • Continue increasing evenly until the face reaches the desired size.
    • Attach safety eyes and embroider the nose and mouth with black yarn.

Ears (make 2):

  1. Ear:
    • Using grey yarn, chain 5.
    • Row 1: Sc in second chain from hook and in each chain across (4).
    • Row 2: Ch 1, turn. Sc2tog twice (2).
    • Row 3: Ch 1, turn. Sc2tog (1).
    • Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.
    • Repeat for the second ear.
    • Optionally, add a bit of fiberfill to the ears to give them a slight 3D effect.
    • Sew the ears onto the top edge of the pencil holder.

Bow:

  1. Bow:
    • Using pink yarn, chain 10.
    • Row 1: Sc in second chain from hook and in each chain across.
    • Rows 2-4: Ch 1, turn. Sc in each stitch across.
    • Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.
  2. Center Wrap:
    • Chain 5, single crochet in each chain across for 2 rows.
    • Wrap around the center of the bow and sew in place.
    • Attach the bow to one of the ears.

Assembly:

  1. Attach the cat face to the front of the pencil holder.
  2. Ensure all pieces are securely sewn on and weave in any loose ends.
