Materials:

RED HEART Super Saver: 1 skein 319 Cherry Red

Crochet Hooks: 5.5mm [US I-9] and 5mm [US H-8]

Yarn needle

Gauge/Tension: GAUGE: 13 sts = 4″; 10 rounds = 4″ in hdc. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain the gauge.

Directions are for size Small/Medium; changes for size Large are in parentheses.

Hat Circumference = 19¾ (21)”.

HAT

With larger hook, ch 64 (68); join with a slip st in first ch to form a ring taking care that ch is not twisted.

Round 1: Ch 1, sc in each ch around; join with a slip st in first sc – 64 (68) sc.

Round 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc around; join.

Ponytail Opening

Round 3: Ch 1, sc in first sc, ch 10, skip next 9 sc, sc in each sc around; join.

Round 4: Ch 1, hdc in first sc, 9 hdc in ch-10 space, hdc in each sc around; join with a slip st in first hdc.

Rounds 5 and 6: Ch 1, hdc in each hdc around; join.

Round 7: Ch 1, [2 hdc in first hdc, hdc in next 3 hdc] 16 (17) times; join – 80 (85) hdc.

Rounds 8 and 9: Repeat Round 5.

Round 10: Ch 1, [hdc in next 4 hdc, skip next hdc] 16 (17) times; join – 64 (68) hdc.

Round 11: Ch 1, [hdc in next 3 hdc, skip next hdc] 16 (17) times; join – 48 (51) hdc.

Rounds 12-14: Repeat Round 5.

Round 15: Ch 1, [hdc in first hdc, skip next hdc] 24 (25) times, hdc in next 0 (1) hdc; join – 24 (26) hdc.

Round 16: Ch 1, sc in each hdc around; join.

For large only:

Round 17: Ch 1, sc in each sc around; join.

Both Sizes

Round 17 (18): Ch 1, [sc in sc, skip next sc] 12 (13) times; join – 12 (13) sc.

Round 18 (19): Ch 1, [sc in sc, skip next sc] 6 times, sc in next 0 (1) sc; join – 6 (7) sc. Fasten off leaving a 6” yarn end. Weave yarn end through remaining sts; draw up firmly, fasten securely. Weave in ends.

Brim

Row 1: Skip 9 sts under Ponytail Opening and next 19 (20) sts of Round 1; with smaller hook, join yarn around the post of next sc; ch 1, sc around next 17 (19) sc; turn.

Rows 2-6: Ch 1, sc in each sc across; turn. Fasten off at end of Row 6. Weave in ends.
