ABBREVIATIONS (U.S.):

  • R: round/row
  • mr: magic ring
  • ch: chain
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • sc: single crochet
  • hdc: half double crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • inc: increase
  • dec: decrease
  • **: repeat to the end of round
  • (...) x...: repeat the inside of parentheses according to the indicated number, example: (...) x2
  • [...] total stitches at the end of round

Using a 4.5 mm crochet hook and worsted weight yarn, the pillow will be approximately 10.2 inches / 26 cm tall. If you want a bigger pillow, you can up the yarn weight and hook size, and if you want it smaller you can downsize the yarn and hook.

This pattern is of intermediate difficulty. If you are a beginner with some experience, you can make this pillow as it uses only basic stitches, but some parts may be a little challenging.

To make this pillow, we will create one panel first, then a second panel and add the details on each one before joining them together. We'll be working flat in rows for the largest portion of each piece and then in the round to make a border and add a little depth to the pillow.

First Panel

Start with the accent color.

11 ch

R1: 10 sc

R2-3: 1 ch, turn, 10 sc [10]

R4: change to main color: 17 ch, turn, 15 sc working back the chain we just made, sc inc into the last chain, 9 sc, sc inc [28]

R5: 1 ch, turn, sc inc, 26 sc, sc inc [30]

R6-7: 1 ch, turn, 30 sc [30]

R8: 1 ch, turn, skip the first st, 29 sc [29]

R9: 1 ch, turn, skip the first st, 28 sc [28]

R10: 1 ch, turn, skip the first st, 10 sc, 17 hdc [27]

R11: 1 ch, turn, skip the first st, 12 sc [12]

R12: 1 ch, turn, 12 sc [12]

R13: 1 ch, turn, 1 sc, sc inc, 8 sc, sc inc, 1 sc [14]

R14-16: 1 ch, turn, 14 sc [14]

R17: 1 ch, turn, sc inc, 12 sc, sc inc [16]

R18-23: 1 ch, turn, 16 sc [16]

R24: 1 ch, turn, 1 sc, sc inc, 12 sc, sc inc, 1 sc [18]

R25-31: 1 ch, turn, 18 sc [18]

R32: 1 ch, turn, 5 sc, 3 hdc, 2 dc, 3 hdc, 5 sc [18]

For the next round, we will work a border all around the piece.

When there's a call to color change, you can decide to carry your other yarn color and work over it or you can cut the yarn each time. I decided to cut it each time, leave short tails and then after it’s all done (so I can be sure I know which side will be the inside), knot all the ends, making them end up on the inside so they aren't visible.

Now, I know this following part looks like a lot, so let me suggest you approach it with a little patience and go slowly.

R33: 1 ch, don't turn, place 1 sc on the side of each row until you reach Row 4 (you should've made 29 st).

Change to the accent color, and make 1 sc on the side of the next 2 rows (2 stitches), on the side of the next row make an increase. Here we've come to the starting chain, place 1 sc into each of the next 9 chains and make 1 increase into the next chain. Back to working on the side of the rows: make 1 sc into the next two rows and then sc together the next row and the next chain, continue placing 1 sc into each of the next 14 chains and make an increase in the last chain.

Change to main color, make 1 sc on the side of the next 6 rows, and then go straight to the first st you can see and you'll make 1 sc in that one, and continue 1 sc in the next 11 stitches, increase into the next stitch, then single crochet together this last stitch and the next row. Continue up the rows placing 1 sc on the side of each (that would be 21 stitches) and we are back at R32 where we want to place: 6 sc, hdc inc, 1 hdc, (dc inc) x2, 1 hdc, hdc increase, 6 sc.

You should have a total of 127 stitches all around.

R34: 1 ch, turn and work on the back loops of the round we just made. So, place 1 sc on the back loop only all around. This round is all worked with the main color. Finish off with a sl st on the first st of the round. You should have again 127 stitches total.

Cut the yarn leaving a short tail, you can hide this tail right now or later.

Second Panel

Repeat PANEL ONE from the very beginning until R33 and then there's a small change for R34.

R34:

1 ch, turn and work on the front loops of R33. So, place 1 sc on the front loop only all around. This round is all worked with the main color. Finish off with a sl st on the first st of the round. You should have the same amount of stitches as the first panel, which is 127 total stitches.

Once you have the second panel, don't cut the yarn yet.

We will continue to decorate each panel now. The front side of each panel is the one where you can see the loops left from the last round.

Heart Decoration

I made one for each panel.

With accent color.

In a mr: 3 ch, 2 dc, 3 hdc, 2 dc, 3 hdc, 2 dc, 2 ch, sl st into ring.

Pull the ring close, cut the yarn leaving enough for sewing.

Sew one heart to each panel. You can choose where you want to put them. I placed mine between about rows 21-27.

Little Hearts

Now, we want to embroider little hearts. I made five, but of course you can make more or less. To embroider the hearts, I grabbed a piece of the accent color yarn and simply followed the "V" shape of a stitch.

Chain Detail

With accent color.

Make a chain of 18. You want to check this fits right for your piece before cutting the yarn and adjust it accordingly by adding or subtracting chains.

We will place this chain on what would be the ankle, that's about rows 11-12 and sort of framed by the loops of the last round. We want to make it look like a weave. This is where you'll adjust the length of the chain if needed, then cut the yarn leaving some for sewing.

Sew it in place.

Assembling the Pillow

Here are two options: you can simply leave a long piece of yarn and align each panel to sew the last rounds together to assemble (remember to stuff before you finish!) or make a slip stitch join, which is what I did.

For the slip stitch join: we didn't cut the yarn on the second panel so we can continue from there. Try to keep a loose tension and chain 1, turn, insert the hook into the front loop of that last stitch, grab your first panel and go into the front loop of the last stitch of that piece, make a sl st. Continue making slip stitches inserting the hook through the front loops of both pieces (stuff the pillow before completing the joining). Once done, cut the yarn and hide the end.
