BERNAT BERELLA GERMANTOWN (2 oz. balls)
— 1 each Main Color (M C) and Contrasting Color (C C) for Beret
— 3 each Main Color (M C) and Contrasting Color (C C) for Scarf
1 BERNAT-Aero crochet hook Size J (Canadian Wool Crochet Hook No. 6)
OR ANY SIZE HOOK THAT WILL GIVE THE STITCH GAUGE GIVEN BELOW

GAUGE: 7 s c = 2 inches; 9 rows = 2 inches

NOTE: To make long d c, work a loose d c through 3 rows directly below.

BERET

Starting at center top and using M C, ch 2. Round 1: Work 6 s c in 2nd ch from hook. Round 2: 2 s c in each st— 12 sts. Round 3: * 1 s c in next st, 2 s c in next st, repeat from * 5 times more— 18 sts. Round 4: Using C C, * 2 s c in next st, 1 s c in each of next 2 sts, repeat from * 5 times more — 24 sts. Round 5: Using C C, * 1 s c in each of next 3 sts, 2 s c in next st, repeat from * 5 times more — 30 sts. Round 6: Using C C, * 1 s c in each of next 4 sts, 2 s c in next st, repeat from * 5 times more — 36 sts. Round 7: Using M C, * work 1 long d c, 1 s c in each of next 6 sts, repeat from * 5 times more — 42 sts. Round 8: Using M C, * 2 s c in next st, 1 s c in each of next 6 sts, repeat from * 5 times more — 48 sts. Round 9: Using M C, * 2 s c in next st, 1 s c in each of next 7 sts, repeat from * 5 times more — 54 sts. Round 10: Using C C, 1 s c in each of next 6 sts, * 1 long d c, 1 s c in each of next 9 sts, repeat from * 5 times more — 60 sts. Round 11: Using C C, * 2 s c in next st, 1 s c in next 9 sts, repeat from * 5 times more — 66 sts. Round 12: Using C C, * 2 s c in next st, 1 s c in each of next 10 sts, repeat from * 5 times more — 72 sts. Round 13: Using M C, * 1 long d c, 1 s c in each of next 6 sts, repeat from * 11 times more — 84 sts. Rounds 14 and 15: Using M C, work in s c, inc 6 sts in same manner as before on each round — 96 sts. Using C C, work in same manner as Round 13, having 1 st more between long d c sts —108 sts. Rounds 17 and 18: Using C C, work in s c, inc 6 sts in same manner as before on each round — 120 sts. Round 19: Using M C, work 1 long d c st between d c sts of previous pattern and, AT THE SAME TIME, dec 12 sts at even intervals. Rounds 20 and 21: Using M C, work in s c, dec 6 sts at even intervals — 108 sts, Rounds 22, 23 and 24: Using C C, repeat Rounds 19 through 21. Rounds 25, 26 and 27: Using M C, repeat Rounds 19 through 21. Rounds 28, 29 and 30: Repeat Rounds 22 through 24. Rounds 31, 32 and 33: Repeat Rounds 25 through 27. Fasten off.

FINISHING: Using both colors, make a pompon and sew to center top.

SCARF

Using M C, ch 33 sts. Row 1: 1 s c in 2nd st from hook, 1 s c in each st to end of ch — 32 s c. Row 2: Ch 1, turn, 1 s c in each s c. Rows 3 and 4: Repeat Row 2. Break off M C. Join C C through loop on hook. Row 5: Using C C, ch 1, turn, * 1 s c in each of 6 s c, 1 long d c, repeat from * 3 times more, 1 s c in each of last 6 s c. Rows 6, 7 and 8: Repeat Row 2. Break off C C. Join M C through loop on hook. Row 9: Ch 1, turn, 1 s c in each of 3 s c, * 1 long d c, 1 s c in each of 6 s c, repeat from *, ending 1 long d c, 1 s c in each of last 2 s c. Rows 10, 11 and 12: Repeat Row 2. Repeat Rows 5 through 12 until there are 23 M C stripes. Fasten off.

FINISHING: FRINGE: Cut strands of yarn 12 inches long. Using 3 strands each of M C and C C, knot in every 3rd st across each short edge. Trim cut ends. Steam.
