Crochet Chunky Stripe Scarf

The Crochet Chunky Stripe Scarf is a cozy and stylish accessory that can add a pop of color and texture to any outfit. Made with chunky yarn and a simple stitch pattern, this scarf features thick stripes that create a bold and graphic design. The chunky yarn gives the scarf a plush and soft texture, making it perfect for wrapping up on a chilly day or adding a touch of warmth to a winter outfit. The stripes can be customized with different colors and yarn weights to match your personal style, making it a great accessory for both casual and dressy occasions.

Stitch sequence is the same for both adult and child scarves -- the child size scarf is shorter and narrower.

NOTE: You will be working one row in each of 3 different colors, so carry unused yarns loosely up side of work. Do not cut unused yarn until instructed to do so.

ADULT VERSION:

Size: approx. 6" wide x 52" long

Gauge: 10 dc = 4" using size J hook

Materials: Size J hook or size to obtain gauge

I used handspun wool for the original scarf in 3 different colors. Yarn weights were in the heavy worsted to chunky range. You may use any chunky-weight yarn of your choice. You need about 150 yds. each of 3 different colors.

Sample scarf colors: Color A - medium brown
Color B - dark brown
Color C - grey-blue

Foundation row: You have a choice of two methods:

With size J hook, chain 129, dc in 4th ch from hook and in each ch across (125 dc)
- OR -

Use the "Elmore" method where you make the foundation chain and first row of dc at the same time. Refer to the book "Crochet Your Way" by Gloria Tracy & Susan Levin, c2000, The Taunton Press. Instructions for this method are on p. 52. Basically, you ch 3 to begin, made 1 dc in 3rd ch from hook, then make dc in the first loop on the SIDE of the previous dc and keep repeating dc into the SIDE of the previous stitch until you have 125 dc.

At end of foundation row, drop Color A (do not cut it but carry colors loosely up side of work) and pick up Color B. Ch 1, turn.

Row 1: Working in back loop only, sc in ea dc across row. At end of row, drop Color B (do not cut but carry loosely up side of work), pick up Color C. Ch 1, turn.

Row 2: Working in BLO, sc in ea sc across row. At end of row, drop Color C, pick up Color A. Ch 3, turn.

Row 3: Working in BLO, dc in ea sc across row. At end of row, drop Color A, pick up Color B. Ch 1, turn.

Repeat Rows 1-3, changing color each row while carrying unused color up side of work, until you have a total of 13 rows, including the foundation row.

Drop Color A and pick up Color B, ch 1, turn. (At this point you may cut Colors A and C, leaving a 6" length for weaving in.)

Working in BOTH loops around entire edge of scarf, sc in ea st around, working 1 sc in each row at scarf ends, working 3 sc in ea corner and encasing the loosely-carried strands inside the sc stitches to hide them. Slip st to first sc, fasten off and weave in ends.

Give the scarf a pull at both ends to straighten stitches.
