Notes and Tips

Helpful to read these before starting and maybe even again when it's time to put your softie together:

  • Do not join pieces that are crocheted in the round unless otherwise indicated
  • A stitch marker will come in handy when repeating rounds. Another helpful method to keep track of your rounds is to start all pieces with a long tail, pulling the tail through the beginning stitch of each round.
  • Use a tiny piece of felt under the eyes to help them stand out. Cut two small circles (tracing around a button, just slightly bigger than your eyes will help make a nice circle). Cut a small slit in the center of the circle, insert the eye stem, and attach to the head. Remember not to close the bottom of the head until you have secured safety eye fasteners.
  • Some pieces are small, so consider weaving in beginning yarn after working a few rounds.
  • Separate yarn into two plies when sewing on the beak. Sew the beak about 7 rounds down from the top of the head using tiny whip stitches, shaping as you sew.
  • To help position facial features: Crochet head and beak pieces first. Stuff the head (but do not close), sew on the beak. Cut two tiny circles from felt, just slightly bigger than the eyes (trace around a small button for help making a nice circle). Cut a small slit in the center of the felt, insert the eye stem in the slit. Next, decide where you want your chick’s eyes (sample eyes are 1 round up from the beak, with 6 single crochet stitches in between). After securing eyes, thread tapestry needle with long ending yarn and weave through remaining stitches, pull tight to gather and close.
  • Needle sculpting will help eyes stand out. Thread tapestry needle with two plies of yarn. Insert needle under the head where stitches won't be seen. Secure yarn and bring needle up in a stitch as close to the inside corner of the right eye as you can (right under the eyelid), move needle across eye to outside edge at a slight angle, insert needle and go back down under the head, tug gently to slightly indent your eye and hold stitch in place. Repeat for the other eye. If you're uncertain about needle sculpting, be sure to visit my blog for more information and a video tutorial.
  • Sew the head to the top center of the body with tiny whip stitches, going around the head and through the body multiple times to ensure a secure attachment.
  • Sew wings to sides of the body, about 2 rounds down from the head, using tiny stitches and sewing through only 4 or 5 of the top stitches.
  • For hair: Cut a piece of yarn about 4 inches long. Separate into individual plies. Thread the tapestry needle with one piece of yarn, insert the needle under one single crochet stitch on the top of the head, pull yarn halfway through, tie a small tight knot in the center, spread the piece and cut it to the desired length. Repeat for each piece and trim to the desired length.
