  • Tahki Yarns Cotton Classic light (DK) weight mercerized cotton yarn (1 3/4 oz/108 yds/50g per hank):
  • 6 hanks #3856 deep indigo

    2 hanks #3003 linen white

  • Size G/6/4mm crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge
  • Tapestry needle
  • Sewing needle
  • 5/8-inch navy shank button

  • GAUGE

    11 sc = 2 inches; 12 sc rows = 2 inches; finished Diamond = 6 1/2 wide x 4 5/8 inches long at points

    PATTERN NOTES

    Weave in loose ends as work progresses. Join with slip stitch as indicated unless otherwise stated.

    BAG

    DIAMOND Make 15.

    Row 1: With indigo, ch 2, sc in 2nd ch from hook, turn.

    Row 2: Ch 1, 3 sc in sc, turn.

    Row 3: Ch 1, 2 sc in first sc, sc in next sc, 2 sc in last sc, turn. (5 sc)

    Row 4: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn.

    Row 5: Ch 1, 2 sc in first sc, sc in each sc to last sc, 2 sc in last sc, turn. (7 sc)

    Rows 6-15: [Rep rows 4 and 5 alternately] 5 times. (17 sc)

    Row 16: Rep row 4.

    Row 17: Rep row 4.

    Row 18: Ch 1, sc in first sc, sk next sc, sc in each sc across until 2 sc rem, sk next sc, sc in last sc, turn. (15 sc)

    Rows 19-28: (Rep rows 17 and 18 alternately] 5 times. (5 sc)

    Row 29: Rep row 4.

    Row 30: Ch 1, sc in first sc, [sk next sc, sc in next sc] twice, turn. (3 sc)

    Row 31: Ch 1, sc in first sc, sk next sc, sc in last sc, turn. (2 sc)

    Row 32: Ch 1, sk first sc, sc in last sc, do not turn. (1 sc)

    Rnd 33: Now working in rnds, ch 1, working around entire Diamond, [1 sc in end of each of first 15 rows, 3 sc in end of next row, 1 sc in end of each of next 15 rows, 3 sc in st at tip of Diamond] twice, join (see Pattern Notes) in beg sc, drop indigo to WS, join white. (72 sc)

    Rnd 34: Ch 1, sc in each of next 16 sc, [3 sc in next sc, sc in each of next 17 sc] 3 times, 3 sc in next sc, sc in last sc, join in beg sc, draw up a lp of indigo, fasten off white. (80 sc)

    Rnd 35: Ch 1, sc in each of next 17 sc, [3 sc in next sc, sc in each of next 19 sc] 3 times, 3 sc in next sc, sc in each of next 2 sc, join in beg sc, leaving a 12-inch length, fasten off. (88 sc)

    ASSEMBLY

    Sew Diamonds tog using Placement Diagram as a guide. Sew A to A, B to B and C to C, 3 sc at point of 2 Diamonds are side edge of Bag, the Strap is worked in these 3 sc.

    TRIM

    Rnd 1: Using Placement Diagram as a guide, join indigo with sc in center sc of 3-sc group on side of bag, 2 sc in same sc as beg sc, sc in each sc around until center sc of next 3-sc group, 3 sc in center sc, sc in each rem sc around, join in beg sc. Fasten off.

    Rnd 2: Join white with sc in center sc of first 3-sc group, work 2 sc in same sc as beg sc, sc in each sc around to next 3-sc group, 3 sc in center st, sc in each rem sc around, join in beg sc, do not fasten off.

    STRAP

    Row 1: Ch 1, sc in same sc as beg ch-1, sc in each of next 2 sc, turn. (3 sc)

    Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each of next 3 sc, turn.

    Rows 3-197: Rep row 2. Leaving a 12-inch length, fasten off.

    Sew row 197 of Strap to 3-sc group on opposite edge of Bag.

    TRIM

    Join indigo in rnd 2 of Bag Trim, si st in each sc around, si st in each sc on both sides of Strap. Fasten off.

    DIAMOND CLOSURE

    Rows 1-8: With white, rep rows 1-8 of Diamond. (9 sc)

    Row 9: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn.

    Row 10: Ch 1, sc in first sc, sk next sc, sc in each sc across until 2 sc rem, sk next sc, sc in last sc, turn. (7 sc)

    Rows 11 & 12: Rep rows 9 and 10. (5 sc)

    Row 13: Rep row 9.

    Row 14: Ch 1, sc in first sc, [sk next sc, sc in next sc] twice, turn. (3 sc)

    Row 15: Ch 1, sc in first sc, sk next sc, sc in last sc, turn. (2 sc)

    Row 16: Ch 1, sk first sc, sc in last sc, do not turn. (1 sc)

    Rnd 17: Now working in rnds, ch 1, working around entire Diamond Closure, 1 sc in end of each of next 7 rows, 3 sc in end of next row, 1 sc in end of each of next 7 rows, (sc, ch 5, sc) in st at tip of Diamond (buttonhole), 1 sc in end of each of next 7 rows, 3 sc in end of next row, 1 sc in end of each of next 7 rows, 3 sc in last st (top of Diamond Closure), join in first sc, leaving a length for sewing, fasten off.

    FINISHING

    Sew top of Diamond Closure to center back of Bag between Strap ends connected to Bag. Diamond should be able to go over bag to center front. Mark position of buttonhole, sew button to front of Bag.
