SPECIAL ABBREVIATIONS
Beg-dc (beginning double crochet) Sc, ch 2. Note The beg-dc counts as one stitch and replaces the traditional ch-3 beginning chain used in place of an initial double crochet.
Beg 3-dc Cl (beginning 3-double crochet cluster) Sc in ch-1 space, ch 1, [yarn over, insert hook in same space and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook] twice, yarn over and draw through 3 loops on hook.
3-dc Cl (3 double crochet cluster) Yarn over, insert hook in indicated stitch or space, draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loop on hook (2 loops remain on hook), [yarn over, insert hook in same stitch or space, draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook] twice, yarn over and draw through all 4 loops on hook.
Picot Ch 4, sc in 4th ch from hook.
Fan (4 dc, picot, 4 dc) in next ch space. Sc2tog (single crochet 2 stitches together) [Insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop] twice, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook.
SPECIAL TECHNIQUE
Join with a duplicate stitch. Work to within last chain of round, and then cut yarn leaving a 6"/15cm tail. Draw last loop on hook all the way through the last stitch made until tail passes through stitch. With yarn needle, run end of tail under both loops of first stitch of round and pull yarn through. Insert needle back through last chain stitch made and behind work. Snug yarn to ensure that ch stitch just made is the same tension as other chain stitches. Weave in tail.
Joining-ch (Joining chain) Ch 1, Insert hook from front to back through corresponding chain space of next Motif, yarn over and draw up a loop through corresponding chain space, ch 1. Adjustable ring method See Resources, pg 93.

SKIRT
First Motif Make an adjustable ring.
Round 1 Ch 2 (counts as first hdc), work 7 hdc in ring; join with sl st in first hdc —8 hdc.
Round 2 Ch 1, (hdc, ch 1, hdc, ch 1) in first st, *(hdc, ch 1, hdc, ch 1) in next st; repeat from * around; join with sl st in first hdc — 16 hdc and 16 ch-1 saps.
Round 3 Sl st in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, beg-3-dc Cl in ch-1 sp, ch 3, *3-dc Cl in next ch-1 sp, ch 3; repeat from * around; join with sl st in beg-3-dc Cl — 16 3-dc Cl and 16 ch-3 saps.

Note: Before working Round 4 (joining round) refer to assembly diagram. Note the neighboring Motif(s). Join Motifs in rows or rounds from the lower edge upwards to ensure that each Motif will need to be joined to at most three neighboring Motifs. The current Motif is joined to each neighboring Motif at middle chain of ch-3 spaces. Hold current Motif and each neighboring Motif with WS together and stitches matching. You will work Round 4 the same as Round 4 of the First Motif except when you work across an edge that needs to be joined to a neighboring Motif work joining-ch (see explanation in Special Abbreviations section) instead of ch-3. Whenever instructed to work ch 3 OR joining-ch, work ch 3 if the current edge does not need to be joined to a neighboring Motif, and work joining-ch if the current edge does need to be joined to neighboring Motif.
Round 4 (joining round) Sl st in next ch-3 sp, ch 1, sc in same sp, *(ch 3 OR joining-ch, sc in next ch-3 sp) twice, (4 dc, ch 3 OR joining-ch, 4 dc) in next ch-3 sp, sc in next ch-3 sp; repeat from * around —4 corners, with 2 ch-3 saps and 3 sc across each of 4 sides. Fasten off.

FINISHING
Block Skirt to finished measurements for desired size. Cut elastic to Waist measurement plus 1"/2.5cm for overlap seam. With WS facing, place lower edge of elastic along Round 5 of Waistband and fold last round of Waistband over elastic. Using yarn needle and yarn, sew last round to Round 5, making sure stitches do not show on RS of Skirt. Leaving approx 2"/5cm open, using sewing needle and thread, sew ends of elastic together with a 1"/2.5cm seam. Sew Waistband closed. Using yarn needle, weave in ends.
