Materials
Any worsted-weight yarn in three colors
For purposes of this written pattern, red, green, and white were used.
Crochet Hook Size G
Note: With these materials your potholder should measure approx. 10 inches. It’s okay to use acrylic yarn if it will be a decorative potholder only. If you’ll use it as a potholder, you should make it in 100% cotton yarn.
Rose
With red, start with a magic circle, or ch 6 and join to first ch to form a ring.
R1: Ch 4 (counts as 1 hdc and ch2), (hdc in ring, ch 2) 7 times; join. (Total of 8 hdc and 8 ch sp)
Tip: Place a marker in your second hdc. You will be stitching in this hdc later in R3.
R2: (1 sc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 2, sc) all in first ch-2 sp (1 petal made). Repeat around. Do not join.
Note: Your work will be all wavy and curling up. That’s okay. It will flatten out when you finish.
R3: This row will be done behind your work of first two rounds. Ch 4, sl st around 2nd hdc from R1 (the hdc you marked in R1. Leave your marker in. You will be stitching here again). Ch 4, sl st into next hdc, repeat to end. End with sl st around 1st hdc from R1.
R4: (1 sc, ch 2, 5 dc, ch 2, sc) in first ch-4 sp; repeat in each ch-4 sp around. Do not join.
R5: This row will be done behind your work of R4. Ch 5, sl st around marked hdc, (ch 5, sl st around next hdc) around. End with sl st around 1st hdc from R1.
R6: (1 sc, ch 2, 7 dc, ch 2, sc) in first ch-5 sp; repeat in each ch-5 sp around; fasten off and weave-in ends.
Flatten out the flower and shape petals with your hands as desired.
Leaves Round
Join green with an sc in center stitch of any petal on the last round of rose, ch 4, *(3dctog, ch 3, 3tctog, ch3, 3dctog) all in center st of next petal (corner made), ch 4, sc in center stitch of next petal, ch 4*. Repeat from * to * around. Join to first sc. Fasten off and weave in ends. (Four groups of three leaves (on corners), 8 ch-4 loops, and 4 sc)
Background Rounds
R1: Join white in any ch-4 space immediately to the left of corner leaves, ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in same sp 5 more times, 6 dc in next ch-4 sp, 4 dc in next ch-3 sp, ch 2, 4 dc in next ch-3 sp (corner made), 6 dc in next ch-4 sp, continue in this manner around making 6 dc in each ch-4 sp and 4 dc in each ch-3 sp with a ch-2 in the corners; join to first dc.
R2: Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in each of next 5 dc. Ch 1, *dc in each of next 6 dc, ch 1, dc in each of next 4 dc, (1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc) in ch-2 sp, 1 dc in each of next 4 dc, ch 1, dc in each of next 6 dc, ch 1*; repeat from * to * around; join to first dc.
R3: Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in each of next 5 dc. Ch 1, skip next ch sp, *dc in each of next 6 dc, ch 1, skip next ch sp, dc in each of next 5 dc, (1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc) in ch-2 sp, 1 dc in each of next 5 dc, ch 1, skip next ch sp, dc in each of next 6 dc, ch 1*; repeat from * to * around; join with green and fasten off white.
Back Square
Start with a magic circle, or ch 4 and join to form a ring.
R1: Ch 3 (counts as a dc), dc twice in ring, ch 2, (dc three times in ring, ch 2) repeat between () twice more join to beginning dc. (Four groups of three dc and 4 ch-2 sp)
R2: Ch 3 (counts as a dc), dc in each of next two dc, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch-2 sp, *(dc in each of next three dc, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch-2 sp*, repeat from * to * around; join to beginning dc. (Four groups of 7 dc and 4 ch-2 sp)
R3: Repeat as in R2, making a dc in each dc and (2 dc, ch-2, 2 dc) in each corner; join. (Four groups of 11 dc and 4 ch-2 sp)
R4: Repeat R3; fasten off round and weave in ends. Trust me. It’s just easier to end the round so you can begin the next round by a corner. (Four groups of 15 dc and 4 ch-2 sp)
The next round will be your increase round. You will be increasing so that your stitch count will match the front stitch count in R1 of background round. It looks better to increase here and get your stitches to match the front rather than at the end.
R5: Join with a sl st in any corner ch-2 sp. Ch 3 (counts as a dc), *2 dc in first dc, 1 dc in next dc, ch 1, 1 dc in each of the next 6 dc, ch 1, 1 dc in each of next 2 dc, 2 dc in next dc, 1 dc in each of next 2 dc, ch 1, 1 dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc, (1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc) in corner space*. Repeat from * to * around to last ch-2 space. 1 dc, ch 2; join to first dc.
R6: Ch 3 (counts as a dc), dc in each of next 3 dc, (ch 1, skip ch-1 sp, dc in each of next 6 dc) twice, ch 1, skip next ch-1 sp, dc in each of next 4 dc, *(dc, ch 2, dc) in corner space, dc in each of next 4 dc, (ch 1, skip ch-1 sp, dc in each of next 6 dc) twice, ch 1, skip next ch-1 sp, dc in each of next 4 dc*. Repeat from * to * around to last ch-2 space. 1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc in last corner space; join to first dc.
R7: Ch 3 (counts as a dc), dc in each of next 3 dc, (ch 1, skip ch-1 sp, dc in each of next 6 dc) twice, ch 1, skip next ch-1 sp, dc in each of next 5 dc, *(dc, ch 2, dc) in corner space, dc in each of next 5 dc, (ch 1, skip ch-1 sp, dc in each of next 6 dc) twice, ch 1, skip next ch-1 sp, dc in each of next 5 dc*. Repeat from * to * around to last ch-2 space. (1 dc, ch 2, 1 dc) in corner sp, 1 dc in last dc; join to first dc and fasten off.
Block front and back squares at this time so they will lie flat.
Joining Front to Back:
Holding wrong sides together, join green to any stitch, ch 1, sc in same stitch and in each stitch around, making 3 sc in each corner space.
Edge as desired.
This is how I edged the one pictured:
R1: Join white to any sc, ch 3 (counts as dc) and dc in each sc around. In corners, make 1 dc in first sc, 4 dc in center sc, 1 dc in last corner sc; fasten off white.
R2: Join red with an sc between 2nd and 3rd dc of 4 dc in corner stitch, skip 3 dc, sc between dc, ch 3; repeat. (I had to fudge this round a little bit in the corners to make it come out correctly, but it’s not noticeable.)
