GAUGE: 12 sc = 4”; 16 rows = 4”. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain the gauge given.
Hat
Beginning at side, ch 28.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across; turn – 27 sc.
Row 2 (right side): Ch 1, sc through both loops of each of the first four sc, sc in back loop of each of the next 22 sc; turn – 26 sc.
Row 3: Ch 1, skip first sc, sc in back loop in each of the next 21 sc, sc through both loops of the last 4 sc; turn – 25 sc.
Row 4: Ch 1, sc through both loops of each of the first four sc, sc in back loop of each of the next 20 sc; turn – 24 sc.
Row 5: Ch 1, skip first sc, sc in back loop in each of the next 19 sc, sc through both loops of the last 4 sc; turn – 23 sc.
Row 6: Ch 1, sc through both loops of each of the first four sc, sc in back loop of each of the next 18 sc; turn – 22 sc.
Row 7: Ch 1, skip first sc, sc in back loop in each of the next 17 sc, sc through both loops of the last 4 sc; turn – 21 sc.
Row 8: Ch 1, sc through both loops of each of the first four sc, sc in back loop of each of the next 16 sc; turn – 20 sc.
Row 9: Ch 1, skip first sc, sc in back loop in each of the next 15 sc, sc through both loops of the last 4 sc; turn – 19 sc.
Row 10: Ch 1, sc through both loops of each of the first four sc, sc in back loop of each of the next 14 sc; turn – 18 sc.
Row11: Ch 1, skip first sc, sc in back loop in each of the next 13 sc, sc through both loops of the last 4 sc; turn – 17 sc.
Row 12: Ch 1, sc through both loops of each of the first four sc, sc in back loop of each of the next 12 sc, sc in the end of each previous 11 rows; turn – 27 sc.
Row 13: Ch 1, sc in back loop in each of the next 23 sc, sc through both loops of the last 4 sc; turn – 27 sc.
Rows 14-61: Repeat Rows 2-13 four more times.
Row 62-72: Repeat Rows 2-12 once more, ch 1 at the end of Row 72; turn.
Joining:
With right sides facing together, hold Row 1 edge on Row 72 edge, join edges with a slip st through front loops of Row 73 and unused loops of foundation ch, to last 4 sts. End with slip st through both loops of last 4 sts and unused loops of foundation ch; fasten off. With yarn needle and long strand of yarn, weave yarn through stitches at top of hat. Cinch together to close space, and fasten securely. Weave in all ends.
