Newborn Crochet Hat with Ears

You’ll need:

125-250 yards #4 worsted weight Red Heart Hopscotch in “Scooter”;

45 yards #4 worsted weight Red Heart Super Saver in “White” for braided ties;

15 yards #4 worsted weight Red Heart Super Saver in “Soft Navy”;

Crochet hook 5 mm and 5,5 mm.


Instructions

With Color A,

Round 1: ch 1, 6 sc in magic circle, join with sl st to first sc. (6)

Round 2: ch 1, 2 sc in each st around, join with sl st to first sc. (12)

Round 3: ch 1, 2 sc in first st, sc in next st *2 sc in next st, sc in next st; repeat from * around, join with sl st to first sc. (18)

Round 4: ch 1, 2 sc in first st, sc in next 2 sts, *2 sc in next st, sc in next 2 sts; repeat from * around, join with sl st to first sc. (24)

Round 5: ch 1, 2 sc in first st, sc in next 3 sts, *2 sc in next st, sc in next 3 sts; repeat from * around, join with sl st to first sc. (30)

Round 6: ch 1, 2 sc in first st, sc in next  4 sts, *2 sc in next st, sc in next 4 sts; repeat from * around, join with sl st to first sc. (36)

Round 7: ch 1, 2 sc in first st, sc in next 5 sts, *2 sc in next st, sc in next 5 sts; repeat from * around, join with sl st to first sc. (42)

Rounds 8-15: ch 1, sc in each st around, join with sl st to first sc. (42)

From the end of round 15, move straight into making the first earflap.

 

First Earflap

Row 1:  sc in next 6 sts, ch 1, turn. (6)

Row 2: sc in next 6 sts, ch 1, turn. (6)

Row 3: sc2tog, sc in next 2 sts, sc2tog, ch 1, turn. (4)

Row 4: sc in each st across, ch 1, turn. (4)

Row 5: sc2tog, sc2tog. (2)

 

Second Earflap

Row 1:  sc in next 6 sts, ch 1, turn. (6)

Row 2: sc in next 6 sts, ch 1, turn. (6)

Row 3: sc2tog, sc in next 2 sts, sc2tog, ch 1, turn. (4)

Row 4: sc in each st across, ch 1,  turn. (4)

Row 5: sc2tog, sc2tog. (2)

Edging round 1: sc evenly around earflaps and hat

Drop Color A, and fasten off.

Join color B,

Edging round 2: ch 1, sc evenly around entire hat.

Fasten off, weave in ends

With color C,

Edging round 3: working from the inside of the hat, sl st loosely around the last round of sc.

Fasten off, weave in ends.

 

Assembly

Using 5mm hook,

Leaving 6″ tail for sewing tip of ear to hat,

Round 1: 6 sc in magic circle, (6)

Round 2: sc in each st around, (6)

Round 3: *2 sc in next st, sc in next st; repeat from * around, (9)

Round 4: *2 sc in next st, sc in next 2 sts; repeat from * around, (12)

Round 5: *2 sc in next st, sc in next 3 sts; repeat from * around, (15)

Round 6: *2 sc in next st, sc in next 4 sts; repeat from * around, (18)

Rounds 7-12: sc in each st around (18)

Fasten off leaving 12″ tail for sewing ears to hat.

Lay hat flat and position ears where you want them along top edge.

Sew the base of the ear to the hat.

Take the tip of the ear and fold it forward so that the point lines up with the front edge of the ear flaps. Sew it down a few rounds below where the base of your ears are with tail left over from the beginning of the ear.
