​Crochet Simple Mittens with Fringe

You’ll need:

120 yards of Drops Nepal yarn;

55 yards of the same yarn, but in another color for fringe;

Crochet hooks 5 mm and 5,5 mm;

Stitch markers;

Tapestry needle.


Sizes:

Toddler (thumbless): approximately 5.5 in. long x 2.75 in. wide at fingers (14 x 7 cm)

Child: approximately 7 in. long x 3.25 in. wide at fingers (18 x 8 cm)

Teen/Adult X-Small: approximately 8.5 inches long x 3.75 in. wide at fingers (21 x 9 cm)

Adult Small/Medium: approximately 9.25 in. long x 4 in. wide at fingers (23 x 10 cm)


Special Stitches

Mini Picot Single Crochet: Insert hook into stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, chain 1 (as in – yarn over and pull up a loop), yarn over and pull through both loops on hook.

Chain 3 Picot Single Crochet: Insert hook into stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, chain 3 (as in – yarn over and pull up a loop), yarn over and pull through both loops on hook.

Chain 4 Picot Single Crochet: Insert hook into stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, chain 4 (as in – yarn over and pull up a loop), yarn over and pull through both loops on hook.

Chain 5 Picot Single Crochet: Insert hook into stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, chain 5 (as in – yarn over and pull up a loop), yarn over and pull through both loops on hook.


Instructions

Use hook size 5 mm for teen/adult x-small mitten.

Use hook size 5.5 mm for adult size small/medium.

(Make 2 as the pattern is the same for right and left.)

Chain 5, slip stitch to join.

Round 1: Two single crochet into back loop of each stitch of starting chain. (10 stitches total). Place stitch marker or begin to use a length of yarn to mark rounds.  Move marker up or weave yarn up for each round forward.

Round 2: *In both loops of first stitch of round, Mini Picot Single Crochet (see Special Stitches Section) and slip stitch, repeat from * for each stitch of round. (20)

Round 3: *In both loops of first stitch of round, mini picot single crochet and slip stitch, slip stitch in next stitch, repeat from * for each stitch of round. (30)

Rounds 4 – 20: *Mini picot single crochet into first stitch of round, slip stitch into second stitch of round, repeat from * for remainder of round. (30)

Round 21: Slip stitch in first 2 stitches of round, loosely chain 7 stitches (thumb hole), skip 3 stitches, slip stitch in next stitch of round, *mini picot single crochet in next stitch of round, slip stitch in next stitch of round, repeat from * for remainder of round. (34)

Round 22: Mini picot single crochet in first stitch of round, slip stitch in second stitch of round, single crochet 2 together (see Special Stitches Section), 5 single crochet, slip stitch in next stitch, *mini picot single crochet in next stitch of round, slip stitch in next stitch of round, repeat from * for remainder of round. (33)

Round 23: Mini picot single crochet in first stitch of round, slip stitch in second stitch of round, single crochet 2 together, 4 single crochet, slip stitch in next stitch, *mini picot single crochet in next stitch of round, slip stitch in next stitch of round, repeat from * for remainder of round. (32)

Round 24: Mini picot single crochet in first stitch of round, slip stitch in second stitch of round, single crochet 2 together, 3 single crochet, slip stitch in next stitch, *mini picot single crochet in next stitch of round, slip stitch in next stitch of round, repeat from * for remainder of round. (31)

Round 25: Mini picot single crochet in first stitch of round, slip stitch in second stitch of round, single crochet 2 together, 2 single crochet, slip stitch in next stitch, *mini picot single crochet in next stitch of round, slip stitch in next stitch of round, repeat from * for remainder of round. (30)

Round 26: Mini picot single crochet in first stitch of round, skip 1 stitch, single crochet 2 together 2 times, *mini picot single crochet in next stitch of round, slip stitch in next stitch of round, repeat from * for remainder of round until last 2 stitches, single crochet 2 together. (26)

Round 27: Single crochet 2 together 2 times, slip stitch in next stitch, *mini picot single crochet in next stitch of round, slip stitch in next stitch of round, repeat from * for remainder of round until last stitch, slip stitch in last stitch. (24)

Round 28: Optional color change for cuff. *Slip stitch in back loop of first stitch of round, Chain 3 Picot Single Crochet (see Special Stitches Section) in front loop, skip one stitch, slip stitch in back loop of next stitch of round, Chain 4 Picot Single Crochet (see Special Stitches Section) in front loop, skip one stitch, repeat from * for remainder of round.

Round 29: *Slip stitch in back loop of first stitch of round, Chain 5 Picot Single Crochet (see Special Stitches Section) in front loop, skip one stitch, repeat from * for remainder of round.

Rounds 30 – 35: Repeat Rounds 28 and 29 for number of rounds indicated.

Round 36: Slip stitch in each stitch of round. (24)

Fasten off.

Weave in ends.


Thumb

Hold mitten with cuff up, attach yarn with slip stitch to thumb hole at right side. (Thumb is worked in a continuous spiral.)

Rounds 1 – 2: Thirteen single crochet. (13)

Round 3: Single crochet 2 together, 11 single crochet. (12)

Round 4: Twelve single crochet. (12)

Round 5: Single crochet 2 together, 10 single crochet. (11)

Round 6: Single crochet 2 together, 9 single crochet. (10)

Round 7: Single crochet 2 together, 8 single crochet. (9)

Round 8: Single crochet 2 together, 7 single crochet. (8)

Round 9: *Single crochet 2 together, repeat from * for remainder of round. (4)


Finishing

Turn mitten to wrong side. Weave in ends.

Turn thumb to wrong side and weave yarn through top of thumb hole to fasten off.

Turn mitten back to right side.
