How to Make a Crochet Koala Backpack and Bag

Hey there! The Crochet Koala Backpack and Bag are just the cutest accessories you'll ever see. Imagine strolling around with a sweet koala friend hanging on your back or by your side - it's practically like having your own cuddly companion wherever you go. Not only are they adorable, but these bags are also practical for carrying your daily essentials while adding a touch of charm to your outfit.

We'll use yarn of any color you choose for your main color; I chose beige, black for the eyes, and brown for the nose. We also need a button, a little bit of white felt, a tapestry needle, and crochet hooks in sizes 4 mm and 3 mm.

You can change the yarn weight and the hook accordingly; just keep in mind it will change the final size of your backpack. Mine is about 19 cm / 7.5 inches for the koala portion, plus the straps, which can be as long as you wish to make them.

With a 4 mm hook, we'll make two circles.

RND 1: 10 hdc in mr

RND 2: *hdc inc* [20]

RND 3: *1 hdc, hdc inc* [30]

RND 4: *2 hdc, hdc inc* [40]

RND 5: *3 hdc, hdc inc* [50]

RND 6: *4 hdc, hdc inc* [60]

RND 7: *5 hdc, hdc inc* [70]

RND 8: *6 hdc, hdc inc* [80]

RND 9: 80 hdc back loop only [80]

Break yarn, hide, and secure loose ends once you have your first circle. DON'T break yarn once you are done with the second one.

Place the two circles with the right sides facing each other. We'll join them with slip stitches all around both circles, leaving 18 stitches unworked to have an opening. Secure and hide loose ends. Now, turn your work inside out.

With a 3 mm hook.

RND 1: 4 sc in mr

RND 2: *sc inc* [8]

Make two small circles with felt and sew or glue one onto each eye. Sew on the front of your backpack as you desire; I placed my eyes between R3-4 at the sides of the magic ring as a reference.

With a 3 mm hook.

In mr: 2 ch, 2 dc, 2 hdc, 1 dc, 2 hdc, 2 dc, 1 ch, 1 sl st.

Sew around the middle of the eyes but a little lower; I placed my nose between R3-4 down from the magic ring.

With a 4 mm hook.

5 ch

RND 1: 1 sc, 1 hdc, 2 dc

Break yarn, leaving enough for sewing. Sew on the top of the back side, where you have your opening. You are going to sew the button opposite your closure. Make sure your button can fit through the two first stitches.

Make two pompoms for the ears. Sew them to the sides of the opening of your bag.

With a 4 mm hook.

3 ch,

RND 1: 2 hdc, 1 ch, turn

RND 2: 2 hdc, 1 ch, turn

Repeat until you reach the desired length; mine measures around 160 cm long.

We'll place the strap through two stitches. First, take an end of the strap through the lower right side, leave that end inside the bag, and grab the other end of the strap. Place it through the upper right side, then the upper left side, and finally through the lower left side. You'll now have both ends of the strap inside the bag; sew them together and secure and hide loose ends. This way, you can have it as a backpack with two straps or change it to one longer strap by pulling up the part we left inside.
