Stitches Used In The Crochet Pattern

To make this crochet purse pattern, there are a few basic crochet stitches you will need to know how to make. Let’s explore what stitches you will need for this pattern.

The Chain Stitch

The chain stitch is a basic crochet stitch you will need to know for this crochet purse pattern. It is the foundation stitch that will get your project started. To learn how to make the chain stitch, be sure to check out this tutorial.

Single Crochet Stitches

The single crochet stitch is made as the base for this purse pattern. A single crochet is a basic crochet stitch that is short and tight. To see the instructions on how to make this stitch, please be sure to check out this tutorial.

Increase Stitch

The increase stitch is used to help make the shape of the base of the crochet purse. This is when two single crochet stitches are made in the same stitch to increase the overall number of stitches in that round.

The Star Stitch Pattern

The star stitch is also used in this crochet purse. This is a pretty stitch that gives the purse some lovely texture. To see the step-by-step tutorial on how to make the crochet star stitch, be sure to check out my tutorial.

  • A Tapestry Needle or yarn needle
  • A small button

Abbreviations

Round 10: ch 2, hdc in each st around. Join with a sl st.

Round 11: ch 3 sts, work star stitches in the rest of the round. Work the star stitches in the BLO in this round. Make as many star stitches as will fit in the round. You may be short one leg for the last star stitch, depending on how you count the spaces. When you reach the end, join with a sl st.

Round 12: ch 2 sts, turn, in the center of each star, make 2 hdc sts. Repeat these steps around. Join with a sl st when you reach the end of the round. This completes your first star stitch section.

Round 13: ch 1, sc in the BLO of each st around. Join with a sl st.

Round 14 – 18: ch 1, sc working through both loops in each stitch around. Join with a sl st.

Repeat rounds 10-18 until you have 4 star sections completed.

Finishing Round: For the last round, you will ch 1, then sc in each st around working in the BLO. Join with a sl st. Finish off and weave in the ends.

Making the Strap

Row 1: Make your chain. The chain needs to be about as long as you want the strap to be. Please note it will expand slightly when you add your next row, so keep that in mind. My strap is just over 46 inches long.

Row 2: Turn, in the 3rd ch from the hook, make a dc st. Dc in each st across the row.

Row 3: ch 1, turn. Take the dc section already completed and fold it in half. Secure it with pins or clips if you have them. Then make a sc in each st securing the top of the dc sts and the bottom at the same time. Doing this will make a nice strong strap for your purse. Continue making sc sts through the top and bottom in each space across. Then finish off.

Assembly & Finishing Touches

Assemble the Strap and Purse. To assemble, you will want to thread a yarn needle or tapestry needle with the same color yarn. Then sew the strap securely to the inside of each side of the purse. Be sure to sew it nice and tight. Then finish off and weave in any ends so that they aren’t visible.

Finishing Touches: I added a little loop and button to the purse to hold the top shut. There are other options if you are feeling adventurous, such as adding a lining, flap, or zipper.

But to take the easy route, you will simply add your hook in the center of the top, then chain approximately 12 stitches for this small button. Join it back with a slip stitch in the same place and finish it off. Sew the button on the other side of the purse. Keep in mind, the number of chains needed may vary depending on the size of your button.

Your purse is now finished and ready to be enjoyed or given away!
