  • Gauge is: rows 1-8 = 2 inches tall and 11 inches wide (it doesn’t have to be exact)
  • Turning CH 1 does not count as a stitch throughout
  • If you prefer to crochet a bag strap instead of using pre-made handles, please see recommendations within the pattern
  • Special stitch tutorials are included within the pattern

Materials Needed:

  • Approximately 409 yards of worsted weight cotton yarn. containing 760 yards.

  • Needle and thread (if needed for sewing on your bag handles)

Stitches:

Special Stitch Tutorial:

Suzette Stitch –One SC and one DC are placed into the same stitch. Skip the next stitch. Repeat. After the last skipped stitch of the row, place 1 SC.

Bobble Stitch (BO) – YO, insert hook into stitch. YO, pull up a loop. YO, pull through first 2 loops on hook (2 loops on hook). *YO, insert hook into same stitch. YO, pull up a loop. YO, pull through 2 loops on hook (3 loops on hook). Repeat from * until 5 loops on hook. YO, pull through all loops on hook. Do not CH to close, instead move to the next stitch and place 1 SC. Across row 9, this will look like: 1 BO, 1 SC, 1 BO, 1 SC etc.

Pattern: (make 2 panels)

CH 46 and begin row 1 in the second CH from your hook.

Row 1:Into the first stitch and each stitch across, place 1 SC. CH 1 and turn.

(45 SC stitches)

Rows 2-8:
Into the first stitch, place 1 SC and 1 DC. SK the next stitch. *Into the next stitch, place 1 SC and 1 DC. SK the next stitch.* Repeat from * to * 20 more times. Place 1 SC into the last stitch. CH 1 and turn.

(23 SC stitches, 22 DC stitches = 45 stitches)

Row 9:Into the first stitch, place 1 SC. *Make 1 BO in the next stitch, followed by 1 SC in the following stitch*. Repeat from * to * 21 more times, CH 1 and turn.

(23 SC stitches, 22 BO stitches = 45 stitches)

Rows 10-33:
Repeat rows 2-9, 3 more times.

Rows 34-40:Repeat rows 2-8

Row 41:

Repeat row 1 but do not CH 1 and turn at the end. Fasten off and weave in all ends.

Edging:

I chose to use a SC edging to create some extra strength and stability. If you prefer to seam your edges using a different method, please feel free.

Place your panels on top of each other (bobble side out). Join yarn with a SS, CH 1 into the top left corner and evenly place 1 SC down the side, making sure to work through both panels. Place 1 SC, CH 2, 1 SC into the first bottom corner and continue placing 1 SC along the bottom edge. Place 1 SC, CH 2, 1 SC into the next bottom corner followed by 1 SC evenly along the last side of the bag. Fasten off and weave in all ends. See photos A, B and C.

Handles:

Your handles might have specific methods of attaching to your bag. Please follow the instructions and attach them to the appropriate spot at the top of the bag. Mine were somewhat narrow and fit nicely stitched directly in the centre, evenly spaced apart. I used an embroidery needle and thread to attach mine.

Other Handle Options: (not included in yardage)

If you prefer to crochet a single strap, flatten the side of the bag so that you can work into the top of the side seam. Depending on the width you’d like, SS into the top of an appropriate stitch and SS into the next few stitches to create the desired width. CH 1 and turn, placing 1 SC into each SS across. CH 1 and turn, place 1 SC into each stitch across. Repeat until you reach the preferred length. SS the final row into the opposite side of the bag OR fasten off and use your yarn needle to seam the handle to the bag. Fasten off and weave in all ends. See photo D.

Great job! Your Breezy Bobble Tote Bag is complete!
