Row 1: sc5tog from 2nd chain, ch 1, *sc5tog from ch 1 (pull up the first loop from “eye” of the star, pull up the next loop from in between the last two spikes worked, pull up the next loop from the last chain worked, pull up the next loop from the next chain, pull up a loop from the next chain (6 loops on the hook). Yarn around the hook, bring through all 6 loops, then ch 1.
Repeat from * until you have 1 chain left, then work 1 hdc in that last ch.
Row 2: Ch 2 and turn. *Work 2 hdc in each ch 1 (“eye” of the star) from the previous row. Repeat from * across the row, then 1 hdc in the last stitch.
Row 3: Ch 3 and turn. sc5tog from 2nd chain (bring up a loop in the second ch from the hook, bring up a loop in the third ch from the hook, bring up a loop from the first stitch, bring up a loop from each of the next three stitches (6 loops on the hook), yarn around the hook and bring through all 6 loops, then ch 1. Now work the row as we similarly did in row 1…*sc5tog from ch 1 (pull up first loop from “eye” of the star, pull up the next loop from in between the last two spikes worked, pull up the next loop from the last stitch worked, pull up the next loop from the next stitch, pull up a loop from the next stitch (6 loops on the hook). Yarn around the hook, bring through all 6 loops, then ch 1. Repeat from * until you have 1 stitch left, then work a hdc into it.
Repeat rows 2 and 3 until it is about 4.5 inches tall from the starting edge, ending on row 2 for a finished look. Note for the ear warmers shown, I did 5 pattern repeats of rows 2 and 3.
Ear Warmer Twist Top
You can simply seam the two ends together for a simple look or put a beautiful twist at the top like the ones shown. To give your ear warmer a twist, turn it inside out (so that the outside is facing inward), bring the ends together and fold each end in half. Place them together like two interlocking “C” shapes.
Seam through all four layers using the whip stitch with a matching piece of yarn and fasten off. Turn the headband right side out.
Finishing
Weave in any ends and your ear warmer is ready to wear!
