For your Handmade Crochet Elephant you will need:

  • 4mm crochet hook
  • DK yarn in Grey (main body colour) approx. 50g
    • Grey 1099 Stylecraft Special DK
  • DK yarn in Pink (or whichever contrasting colour you like) approx. 25g
    • Candyfloss 1130 Stylecraft Special DK
  • DK yarn in White & Black (for eye details, small amount of each)
    • White 1001 Stylecraft Special DK
    • Black 1002 Stylecraft Special DK
  • Soft toy filling
  • Darning needle to sew it all together
  • Ribbon (for the bow, if using)

Head – Grey (Main Body Colour)

  • Make a magic ring (MR), 6sc into MR (6sts) – do not join to first stitch, carry on working in the round
  • Inc in each st x 6 (12sts)

  • 3sc, inc x 6 (30sts)
  • 4sc, inc x 6 (36sts)

Trunk – Grey, Main Body Colour

Outer Ears x 2 – Main Body Colour

  • Make a magic ring (MR), 6sc into MR (6sts) do not join to first stitch, carry on working in the round
  • Inc in each st x 6 (12sts)
  • 1sc, inc x 6 (18sts)
  • 2sc, inc x 6 (24sts)
  • 3sc, inc x 6 (30sts)
  • 4sc, inc x 6 (36sts)
  • 5sc, inc x 6 (42sts)

  • Attach contrasting colour ear piece (wrong sides facing together)
  • 1sc in each stitch, through both outer and inner ear pieces (60sts)
  • SS, Fasten off (leaving a piece of yarn for sewing) – Sew each ear to side of elephants head

Legs x 4 – Contrasting colour

  • Make a magic ring (MR), 6sc into MR (6sts) do not join to first stitch, carry on working in the round
  • Inc in each st x 6 (12sts)
  • 1sc, inc x 6 (18sts)
  • 2sc, inc x 6 (24sts)
  • 3sc, inc x 6 (30sts)
  • 30sc in BLO (30sts)
  • 30sc x 2 rows
  • Change colour to main body colour
  • 3sc, dec x 6 (24sts)
  • 1sc in each st x 24sts for 6 rows
  • Dec 1, 1sc in each st (23sts)
  • Continue decreasing 1 stitch in each row until you have 18sts
  • 1sc in each st (18sts)
  • SS, Fasten off (leaving a long piece of yarn for sewing together) and stuff each leg lightly with soft toy filling then sew to the body) and sew to sides of elephants body

Tail – Main Body Colour

  • Ch 6, SC into 2nd CH from hook and SC into each st to end, CH1, turn
  • 1sc in each st to end, CH1 – repeat for 5 rows
  • Fold tail in half & SS x 5sts (joining both pieces together)
  • Fasten off (leave long threads for sewing onto body)
  • Change colour to contrasting colour and SS to end of tail (opposite end to threads)
  • *Ch 10, SS back into starting SS, then SS into next stitch* repeat *-* 5 times
  • Fasten off (leaving a long piece of yarn for sewing together) and sew to elephants body

Make sure you are happy that all pieces are securely attached and sew eyes in white & black yarn onto the elephant’s face.

Add ribbon to neck if required.
