Crochet Vintage-Inspired Bonnet

Crocheting a vintage-inspired bonnet is such a delightful craft project! Hook: 5.5 mm (I/9).

Yarn: Worsted weight. I used Red Heart.

Size: Newborn to 6 week old – 36cm (14″) head circumference.

Gauge: 12 hdcs per 10cm (4″).

HAT INSTRUCTIONS:

Ch2 and work the following row into the 2nd ch from hook (or magic circle).

R1. ch2 (counts as first hdc here and throughout), then 9 hdc into 2nd ch from hook (or magic circle – depending on method you used).

R2. ch2, hdc in same stitch….then 2hdc in each stitch around. Join with sl st to to of beginning chain. (20 hdc)

R3. ch2, hdc in same stitch, (hdc in next stitch, 2hdc in next stitch) repeat between brackets until end of round. Join with sl st to to of beginning chain. (30 hdc)

R4. ch2, hdc in same stitch, hdc in next 2 stitches, (2hdc in next st, hdc in next two sts) repeat between brackets until end of round. Join with sl st to to of beginning chain. (40 hdc)

R5. ch2, hdc across next 37 stitches (38 hdc)

R6. turn, ch2, hdc across next 37 stitches (38 hdc)

Repeat row 6 until work measures 8.5cm. I had 9 rows of 38 hdc total.

Then….

Turn, ch1, sc in same stitch, sc across remaining stitches working one decrease over forehead by single crocheting 2 together (37 sc)

SCALLOP EDGING

Turn, ch1, sc in same stitche, skip 2 stitches, 5 dc in next stitch, skip 2 stitches, 1 sc in next stitch, {skip 2 stitches, 5 dc in next stitch, skip 2 stitches, 1 sc in next stitch}. Repeat between { } across. 6 scallops made.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

TASSELS/TIES

Ribbon tie (make 2): cut a 50cm length of ribbon, double over and loop through one of the front corners of bonnet

Lace tie: cut a 85cm length of lace. Weave through the stitches of the hdc row closest to face edge, making sure to leave approx 25cm at the start and the finish to form the ties.
