pattern:

With main color,

Rnd 3: sl st in next 2 dc, and in 1st ch-sp, ch 3, (2 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in same ch-sp, ch 1, (work shell in next ch-sp, ch 1) around, join w/ sl st to 3rd beg ch; 9 shells

Finish off

Rnd 4: using contrasting color, join w/ dc in ch-sp of any shell, tr, dtc, ch 2, dtc, tr, dc, ch 4, (dc, tr, dtc, ch 2, dtc, tr, dc, ch 4) in ea shell around; 9 “peaks” – these will be the hearts

Finish off

Rnd 5: using main color, working in front of ch-4 sps from Rnd 4, join w/ dc in any unused ch-sp from Rnd 3, * dc in next st, tr in next st, ch 4, bringing the ch behind the “peaks,” sk 1st st after peak, tr in next st, dc, dc in ch-sp, rep from * around, join with sl st to starting dc

NOTE: all ch-4 sps should be on wrong side of work, they should not be visible from front of finished piece

Rnd 6: ch 3, 2 dc in same st, * work shell in ch 2 of Rnd 4, sk tr and next dc on Rnd 5, 3 dc in next dc, rep from * around, work last shell as prev, join with sl st to 3rd beg ch

Finish off

Weave in ends

Block as necessary to keep shape.

The row done in contrasting color should look like a heart near the top of each point around coaster, 9 in all.

Variation – the hearts may be worked separately as well. Omit ch 4 in between hearts, and start each heart individual by joining with a double crochet. In a single color or an ombre (variegated color), this would leave unnecessary ends, but it is the best way if you want several different colors.
