Materials:

Main color, Contrasting color and Black worsted weight yarn
G crochet hook

With MC, ch 5. Sl st in 1st ch to form ring.

R1: Ch 3, 2 dc in ring; ch 1, *3 dc in ring, ch 1.* Repeat from * to * until you have 8 sets of 3 dc, ch 1.
Join with sl st in top of ch 3.

R2: Sl st in next 2 dc and into ch 1 space. Ch 3, (2 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in ch 1 space, *(3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc)[shell made] in next ch 1 space*. Repeat from * to * around. Join with sl st in top of ch 3.

R3: Sl st in next 2 dc and ch 1 space. Ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, in ch 1 space, sc in between shells in previous row. *3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc,(shell made) in next ch 1 space, sc in between shells of previous row*. Repeat from * to * around. Join with sl st in top of ch 3.

R4: Sl st in next 2 dc and into ch 2 space. Ch 3, 3 dc, ch 2, 4 dc in ch 2 space. (Skip next 2 dc, yo, insert hook in next dc, yo and draw up loop, yo and draw through 2 loops on hook. Repeat for next sc and next dc, yo and draw through remaining 4 loops on hook)-inverted shell made. *4 dc, ch 2, 4 dc in next ch 2 space, make another inverted shell*. Repeat from * to * around. Join in top of ch 3. Fasten off.

R5: Attach contrast color in any ch 2 space, ch 3, 3 dc, ch 2, 4 dc in ch 2 space. Dc in next 3 dc, do inverted shell from last row, dc in next 3 dc. *4 dc, ch 2, 4 dc, in ch 2 space, dc in next 3 dc, do inverted shell, dc in next 3 dc.* Repeat from * to * around. Sl st in top of ch 3. Fasten off.

Fold in half with right side facing out and matching points.

R6: Attach black in a dc of top left edge of wing(crochet 2 thicknesses together). Ch 1, sc in same st. *Sc in each dc across to ch 2 space. 2 sc, ch 3, sl st in 1st ch of ch 3, sc in ch 2 space.* Repeat from * to * around to top of right wing. Sc across top of wing to beginning ring doing 1 sc in ring. Ch 10 sc in other side of ring. Sc across to left wing tip, sl st in 1st sc. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Body: With black, ch 35 and fasten off leaving 1 - 2" tail on each end. Tie around middle of butterfly through head loop with ends hanging down at bottom and even up. See photo for placement.
