Notes

  1. In this pattern, granny stitch is made using hdc instead of the standard dc, with no ch between them. This reduces gaps.
  2. Starting chains count as a stitch unless stated otherwise.
  3. Use stitch marker to mark 1st st in row, if helpful.
  4. Stitch count is shown at the end of each row in bold.
  5. Check stitch count at the end of each row.

Gauge

Not essential for this mug rug pattern, but to match measurements (approx.): 1 granny group = 0.8” (2cm), 2.3 granny stitch groups x 5 rows = 2” (5cm). Test by making 1st 5 rows of pattern and measure.

Special Stitches/Techniques

Hdc Granny stitch: 3 hdc worked into every 3rd stitch for row set up, or the space between granny st groups of previous row.

Two Double Crochet Cluster (2dc-cl) = A simple cluster stitch made from two double crochet stitches worked together as one stitch: *Yo, insert hook into indicated st, yo, pull up a loop, yo, pull through 2 loops on hook, in same stitch repeat from * once more, yo, pull through all 3 loops on hook (2dc-cl stitch complete). 

MUG RUG INSTRUCTIONS

Row 1 RS: With C1: ch 21, hdc in 3rd ch from hook (1st 2 ch counts as hdc), sk 2 ch, *3 hdc in next ch, sk 2 ch*, repeat from * to * to last st, 2 hdc in last st. Turn. – 5 hdc granny, 4 hdc

Row 2 WS: Ch 2 (counts as hdc), 3 hdc in sp between 1st group of granny sts and in each sp to last, 3 hdc in last sp, hdc in last st (ch-2 of prev row). Turn. – 6 hdc granny, 2 hdc

Row 3 RS: Ch 2 (counts as hdc), hdc in 1st sp, 3 hdc in next sp, and in each sp to last sp, hdc in last sp, hdc in last st (ch-2 of prev row). Turn. – 5 hdc granny, 4 hdc

Rows 4-5: Repeat rows 2 and 3 once. Don’t turn after completing row 5. Fasten off C1.

Row 6 RS: Join C2 in 1st st, sc in 1st and 2nd sts, sc into sp between 1st hdc granny group, *sk 1st hdc of granny, sc in next 2 sts, sc in sp*, repeat from * to * to last sp, sc in sp, sk hdc, sc in last st. Fasten off C2. Do not turn. – 19 sc

Row 7 RS: Join C3 in 1st sc, ch 3, dc in same st (counts as 1st 2dc-cl), *ch 1, sk 1 st, 2dc-cl in next st*, repeat from * to * to end. Fasten off C3. Do not turn. – 10 2dc-cl

Row 8 RS: Join C2 in top of ch-3, sc in dc (not ch-3), *sc in ch-1 sp, sc in 2dc-cl*, repeat from * to * to end. Fasten off C2. Do not turn. 19 sc

Row 9 RS: Join C1 in 1st st, ch 2, hdc in same st,sk 2 sts, *3 hdc in next st, sk 2 sts*, repeat from * to * to last st, 2 hdc in last st. Turn. – 5 hdc granny, 4 hdc

Rows 10 – 13: Repeat rows 2 to 5. Do not turn.

Weave in ends.

MUG RUG BORDER

RS: Join C2 in 1st st of row 13, 3 sc in 1st st, sc in next, sc into sp between 1st hdc granny group, *sk 1st hdc of granny, sc in next 2 sts, sc in sp*, repeat from * to * to last sp, sc in sp, sk hdc, 3 sc in last st. Evenly space 16 sc along left edge. On bottom side: 3 sc in 1st st, *2 sc in sp between 1st hdc granny group, sc in next* repeat from * to * to row end, 3 sc in last st. Evenly space 16 sc along right edge. Join to 1st sc with sl st or use invisible join method if familiar. Fasten off C2 and weave in ends. – 78 sc (21 sc at top and bottom, 18 sc on each side)
