Notes:

  • This pattern is written in US terms
  • This project is small and the same size as a typical gauge swatch. The finished project measures approximately 4×4 inches
  • Turning chains 1 and 2 do not count as a stitch
  • A trick for neater edges is to replace the turning CH 2 with a turning CH 1. This is simply preference and not at all required for the pattern
  • A special stitch tutorial is included below. A stitch placement photo is on page 3
  • You might find it beneficial to block your coaster after completion

Materials Needed:

  • Approx. 15 yards of worsted cotton yarn per coaster.
  • 4mm hook
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors
  • Measuring tape

Stitches:

CH – Chain
SK – Skip stitch
SS – Slip Stitch
SC – Single Crochet

DC – Double Crochet

Special Stitch Tutorial:

Crossed Double Crochet Stitch – For this pattern, skip two stitches and make one DC in the next stitch. Continue by placing 1 DC within the second skipped stitch. This will create an “X” effect/criss-cross appearance with the first DC in the back and the second DC in the front.

Pattern:

Begin with CH 19 and begin row 1 in the second CH from your hook.

Row 1:
Into the first stitch and each stitch across, place 1 SC. CH 2 and turn.

(18 SC stitches)

Rows 2-8:
Into each of the first 4 stitches, place 1 DC. *CH 1, SK two stitches and place 1 DC into the next stitch. Place 1 DC into the 2nd skipped stitch.* Repeat from * to * two more times. CH 1, SK 1 stitch. Place 1 DC into each of the next 4 stitches. CH 2 and turn for all rows except row 8. After completing row 8, please CH 1 instead.

(8 DC stitches, 3 Crossed DC segments, 4 CH 1 stitches = 18 stitches)

Row 9: (Crochet into the CH 1 stitch, not the CH 1 space from the previous row)
Into the first stitch and each stitch across, place 1 SC. Fasten off and weave in ends.

(18 SC stitches)
