Helping Rhonda with Cowboy Crochet Hat

The chain 1 at the beginning of the rounds does not count as a stitch. When joining at the end of rounds, join to the first stitch.

When you are working the increasing rounds for the crown of the hat, and for the brim of the hat, depending on your tension you may encounter some “wavy” edges. To help this, work a plain round (a round without increasing, and just 1 single crochet stitch in each stitch all the way around) in between your increase rounds. This will help to “ease” the extra fabric from the increasing and make your edges more even. Not everyone will see this happen. It just depends on the crocheter.

If you do not use the recommended yarn, I highly suggest a 100% acrylic yarn. This is what helps the hat hold its shape, and keeps the “fabric” sturdy.

You may also use a chunky weight 100% acrylic yarn, as long as you achieve the correct gauge.

The way I have this pattern written calls for joining at the end of each round. This will create a seam. However, I have found that the seam is very easy to disguise/hide within the back of the hat. I also feel that the seam almost helps the hat keep its shape and makes it easier to shape. I have experimented with working this hat seamlessly, which includes placing a marker at the beginning of round 2, and moving it up as you work. This does eliminate a seam. If the seam is something that you’d like to avoid, you may decide to work the hat seamlessly by doing as I mentioned and placing a marker at the beginning of round 2 and moving it up as you work. Otherwise, follow the directions as written.
