You’ll need:
570m/623yds Artesano Aran (shade C853 Pine) 5mm;
Circular needle (80cm long);
1 stitch marker.
Size: about 162.5 cm wide and 76 cm long.
Stitches control: 14sts and 26 rows = 10 x 10 cm.
Instructions
Garter Tab Cast On
Using 5mm needles, cast on 3 stitches
k14 rows in garter stitch
k3, pick up and knit one stitch into each of the 7 garter ridges along selvedge edge, pick up and knit 3 stitches from cast on edge.
You now have 13 stitches.
Shawl Body
Row 1: k3, yo, k3, yo, pm, k1, yo, k3, yo, k3 17 sts
Row 2: k3, p to last 3 sts, k3 (slipping marker to RH needle)
Row 3: k3, yo, k5, yo, sm, k1, yo, k5, yo, k3 21 sts
Row 4: same as Row 2
Row 5: k3, yo, k7, yo, sm, k1, yo, k7, yo, k3 25 sts
Row 6: same as Row 2
Row 7: k3, yo, k9, yo, sm, k1, yo, k9, yo, k3 29 sts
Row 8: k to end (slipping marker to RH needle)
Row 9: k3, yo, k11, yo, sm, k1, yo, k11, yo, k3 33 sts
Row 10: same as Row 8
You should now have 33 stitches (26 shawl body sts + 1 central st + 6 garter stitch edging)
Continue Shawl Body
The stocking and garter stitch pattern is worked over 10 rows.
Continue with written instructions or use Chart A on page 5.
Row 11: k3, yo, k to m, yo, sm, k1, yo, k to last 3 sts, yo, k3 37 sts
Row 12: k3, p to last 3 sts, k3 (slipping marker to RH needle)
Row 13: same as Row 11 41 sts
Row 14: same as Row 12
Row 15: same as Row 11 45 sts
Row 16: same as Row 12
Row 17: same as Row 11 49 sts
Row 18: k to end (slipping marker to RH needle)
Row 19: same as Row 11 53 sts
Row 20: same as Row 18 You should now have 53 stitches (46 shawl body sts + 1 central st + 6 garter stitch edging) 5
Continue Shawl Body - Chart A
Ignore this section if you have followed the written instructions up to Row 20.
Rows 11-20 of the chart are shown below. Work as follows:
Every RS row: k3, work chart, sm, k1, work chart, k3
WS rows 12, 14 & 16: k3, p to last 3 sts, k3 (slipping marker to RH needle)
WS rows 18 & 20: k all stitches (slipping marker to RH needle)
This continues the 3 stitch garter stitch edge which is not shown on chart.
You should now have 53 stitches (46 shawl body sts + 1 central st + 6 garter stitch edging)
Continue Shawl
Repeat rows 11-20 another 11 times.
You have now knitted 130 rows and have completed the body of the shawl. You are ending on a WS row, with the RS of your knitting facing for the start of the shawl border.
You should now have 273 stitches (266 shawl body sts + 1 central st + 6 garter stitch edging) 20 19 18 k on rs, p on ws 17 16 yarn over 15 14 knit on ws 13 12 11 6
Shawl Border
Row 131: k3, yo, k to m, yo, sm, k1, yo, k to last 3 sts, yo, k3 277 sts
Row 132: k to end (slipping marker to RH needle)
Row 133: same as Row 131 281 sts
Row 134: same as Row 132
Row 135: same as Row 131 285 sts
Row 136: same as Row 132
Row 137: same as Row 131 289 sts
You should now have 289 stitches (282 shawl body sts + 1 central st + 6 garter stitch edging)
Cast off using the Russian Bind Off method: k2, slip these stitches back onto left hand needle, k2tog, *k1, slip both stitches back to left needle, k2tog, repeat from * to end. 7
Finishing
Gently pin shawl out to required size using rustproof pins. Spray with water and leave until dry. This is my preferred method for blocking.
