Puff Stitch Crochet Hot Pad
First, we crochet the hot pad in back-and-forth rows. Then, we add the edging and create the loop. The last round finishes off both the dishcloth and the loop.
Notes
How to crochet puff stitch:
Yarn over, insert your hook in the stitch and pull up a loop.
Then, yarn over again, insert the hook in the stitch, and repeat until you have 4 yarn overs and 4 pulled stitches on your hook (9 in total, together with your working loop).
Grab the yarn and pull it through all of these loops at once. This is your puff stitch.
The number in brackets (#) signifies how many stitches you have in each row.
1 ch at the beginning of the round doesn’t count as a stitch and isn’t included in the overall stitch count.
The foundation chain is a multiple of 4 + 5. Using this calculation, you can easily modify the size of this hot pad/dishcloth.
The Pattern
Start: chain 29
C1 | Row 1: 1 ch, 1 sc in each st (29)
C2 | Row 2: 1 ch, 2 sc, 1 puff, *3 sc, 1 puff* x 6, 2 sc
C2 | Row 3: 1 ch, 1 sc in each st (29)
C1 | Row 4: 1 ch, 4 sc, 1 puff, *3 sc, 1 puff* x 5, 4 sc
Repeat rows 1-4 eight times, but end on row 3 at the last repeat. Alternatively, continue until you reach the desired size. End on a row of single crochets.
Secure any yarn ends you have on the sides. We will crochet over them when making the edging.
Edging
Round 1: Chain 1. Start in any corner and make 2 sc there. Then, work 1 single crochet per one stitch along all sides and 2 sc in each corner, all around the dishcloth.
Close the round with a slip stitch in the first stitch.
If the edging is too tight, go up a hook size. Hide the remaining yarn ends inside the stitches as you work.
Establishing the Loop: Then, make a loop by chaining 10-15 stitches (or however many you want). Attach the loop on the other side of the corner with a slip stitch, in the first stitch on the side.
Round 2: Chain 1, work 1 sc in each stitch and 3 sc in each corner. When you reach the loop, work single crochet stitches around the chain (working inside the loop, not in the individual stitches), and slip stitch into the first stitch of this round.
Cut the yarn, secure it, and weave in any remaining ends. Block your puffy crochet hot pad.
