Crochet Curlicue Candy Cane
The crochet curlicue candy cane is one delightful holiday project that will surely add a touch of charm to your decorations. With its whimsical design and festive colors, this sweet creation is bound to spread some cheer and warmth throughout your home. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned crocheter, this fun and easy pattern will have you hooked from the very first stitch. Imagine the joy on your loved ones' faces when they see these adorable candy canes adorning your tree or hanging as cute accents around your home. So grab your yarn and hook, and let the holiday crafting magic begin! Happy crocheting!
Materials:
- H (5.0 mm) crochet hook
- Worsted weight #4 acrylic yarn in two colors of your choice, I used less than an ounce for each curlicue. (Yarn shown is Loops & Threads Impeccable in “Bright White” and “Red Hot”
- Yarn/tapestry needle
- Scissors
- Measuring Tape
- Hot glue/craft glue
- Small piece of wire to give the candy cane its hook shape. I used a paper clip (bent open and straightened), but a piece of floral wire would also work well.
- Optional embellishments: ribbon, bells, glittery pompoms, pre-made bows, and other festive small items you can glue on to the candy cane.
Sizing:
- 6 inches tall (finished size after bending it into the hook shape)
Pattern Notes:
- Try experimenting with different yarn colors when you crochet the curlicues for a variety of candy cane looks. You can try traditional holiday colors or someone’s favorite colors too!
- You can get really creative with the embellishments on your candy cane, see materials list above for ideas. I used a bow and a bell on the one pictured.
- Can’t make a bow? No worries! Premade bows can be found in craft stores, sewing isles, etc.
Crochet Curlicue Candy Cane Pattern:
- Chain 40
- Work 3 hdc into the third chain from the hook.
- Work 3 hdc into each chain across.
- Fasten off and set aside.
- Make a second curlicue the same way and move on to the next section for assembly.
- Note: sometimes when making a crochet curlicue it can get a little twisted up as you work. You may need to straighten it out and “recoil” it before you move on.
Finishing & Assembly:
- Line up the two curlicues starting with the sides where the ends are and coil them together
- Seam the curlicues together at the top with one of the tails.
- Weave the remaining tails in.
- Grab your wire-I used a paper clip that I bent into a straight piece. Your wire should be no longer than the length of the coils. If longer trim back.
- Run the wire through the middle of your curlicue coil, taking care to keep it through the middle along the entire piece.
- Bend the candy cane at the top as shown in the photos to make the “hook” shape.
- Pop the wire out a little and add glue to either end of the wire, then pull back over the wire.
- Before glue dries/cools, adjust the candy cane curlicue coils. If the candy cane is looking lumpy or slightly uncoiled, simply twist it back up, then let the glue dry/cool to lock everything in place.
- If you like, you can glue various decorative items on to your candy cane. I made a simple bow with a shiny gold bell glued to the center. Try a variety of embellishments (see materials list above for ideas) for lots of different looks!
- Let all glue cool/dry completely before using.
