Crochet Cork Screw Shell Hat

Size: Teen/Adult – stretches to fit approx. 21” circumference – approx. 7.5” high

Materials:

175 yds. medium-wt. (label symbol 4) cotton or cotton/acrylic blend yarn

(sample shown in Coats & Clark “TLC Cotton Plus”)

Size H/8 (5 mm) crochet hook, or size needed to achieve gauge

Tapestry needle

Gauge: 16 sts = 4” in spiral single crochet on size H hook

Terms/Abbreviations: back loop only (BLO), beginning (beg), chain (ch), decrease (dec), double crochet (dc), each (ea), hook (hk), increase (inc), repeat (rep), round (rnd), single crochet (sc), single crochet two together (sc2tog), slip stitch (sl st), stitch (st), together (tog)

Pattern notes: Top of hat is worked in spiral single crochet. Do not join rounds, but work stitches in a continuous spiral until shell section is reached.

Use thread marker to note beg of rnds.

Special stitches:

Open shell: Work (2dc, ch1, 2dc) in same st

Closed shell: 5 dc in same st

Hat

Rnd 1: Ch 4, join into ring (or use disappearing loop beginning method: wind yarn around forefinger once, insert hook into loop, yo, pull loop through ring), ch 1, work 6 sc over strands of ring (pull yarn tail to close ring.) DO NOT JOIN but continue in spiral single crochet. Place thread marker to note beg of rnds.

Rnd 2: 2 sc in ea sc around, do not join (12 sc)

Rnd 3: 2 sc in ea sc around, do not join (24 sc)

Rnd 4: Sc in first sc, 2 sc in next sc, *sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc, rep from * around, do not join (36 sc)

Rnd 5: Sc in ea sc around (36 sc)

Rnd 6: Sc in first 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc, *sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc, rep from * around, do not join (48 sc)

Rnd 7: Sc in ea sc around (48 sc)

Rnd 8: Sc in first 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc, *sc in next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc, rep from * around, do not join (60 sc)

Rnd 9: Sc in ea sc around (60 sc)

Rnd 10: Sc in first 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc, *sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc, rep from * around, do not join (72 sc)

Rnd 11-13: Sc in ea sc around. At end of last rnd, join with sl st (72 sc)

Beg shell rnds:

Rnd 14: Ch 1, sc in same sc, skip 2 sc, in next sc work (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc)(open shell completed), *skip 2 sc, sc in next sc, skip 2 sc, open shell in next sc, rep from * around, join with sl st (12 shells)

Rnd 15: Sl st to center ch-1 sp of first shell, ch 1, sc in same sp, work open shell in next sc, *sc in center ch-1 sp of next shell, open shell in next sc, rep from * around, join with sl st (12 shells)

Rnd 16: Ch 3, work (dc, ch 1, 2 dc) all in same sc (beg open shell completed), sc in ch-1 sp of next shell, *open shell in next sc, sc in ch-1 sp of next shell, rep from * around, join with sl st to top of beg ch-3 (12 shells)

Rnds 17-20: Rep Rnds 15-16.

Rnd 21: Rep Rnd 15.

Rnd 22: Ch 3, work 4 dc all in same sc (beg closed shell completed), sc in ch-1 sp of next shell, *closed shell in next sc, sc in ch-1 sp of next shell, rep from * around, join with sl st to top of beg ch-3 (12 shells). Fasten off and weave in tails.

Finishing

Corkscrew topper: Ch 60, thread beg end of ch through top center of hat, then proceed to form corkscrew:

Work 3 sc in ea ch across, skipping over sts where chain is threaded through top of hat. Fasten off. Twist ch to form corkscrew trim.
