Crochet Lacy Fan Shawl

Size: Approx. 18” wide x 60” long

Materials:

700 yds. worsted wt. yarn (sample shown in Caron “Color Match”)

Size K/10.5 (6.50 mm) crochet hook, or size needed to achieve gauge

Tapestry needle

Gauge: In pattern, 2 fans = 7”, 6 rows = 5” on size K/10.5 (6.50 mm) hook

Pattern notes: Although photos show orientation of stitch pattern as one-directional, instructions have been written to work shawl from center back outward so that the stitch pattern runs in the proper direction on each end of the shawl.

Special stitches:

Fan = tr, (ch 2, tr) 4 times

Terms/Abbreviations: beginning (beg), chain (ch), double crochet (dc), hook (hk), repeat (rep), single crochet (sc), skip (sk), slip stitch (sl st), space (sp), stitch (st), triple crochet (tr)

Shawl

First Half:

Row 1 (RS): Beg at center back of shawl, ch 57, sc in 2nd ch from hk, *ch 1, sk 4 ch, in next ch work [tr, (ch 2, tr) 4x](Fan completed), ch 1, sk 4 ch, sc in next ch, rep from * to last 5 ch, ch 1, sk 4 ch, in last ch work (tr, ch 2) twice, tr in same ch, turn (5 full fans, one half fan)

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in same st at base of ch-1, *ch 3, sk next ch-2 sp, dc in next ch-2 sp,** ch 2, sk next tr-sc-tr, dc in first ch-2 sp of next Fan, ch 3, sc in center tr of Fan, rep from *, ending last rep at **, ch 1, tr in last sc, turn.

Row 3: Ch 7, in first ch-1 sp work (tr, ch 2, tr), ch 1, sk ch-3 sp, sc in next sc, *ch 1, sk ch-3 sp, Fan in next ch-2 sp, ch 1, sk next ch-3 sp, sc in next sc, rep from * to end, turn (5 full fans, one half fan)

Row 4: Ch 6, dc in first ch-2 sp, ch 3, sc in center tr of Fan, *ch 3, sk next ch-2 sp, dc in next ch-2 sp, ch 2, sk next tr-sc-tr, dc in next ch-2 sp, ch 3, sc in center tr of Fan, rep from *, ending last rep with sc in 3rd ch of turning ch, turn.

Rep Rows 2-5 until piece measures approx. 30” from beg, ending with Row 2.

Fasten off.

Second half:

Working on opposite side of foundation ch, attach yarn to first ch at right-side edge of piece.

Row 1: Ch 1, sc in same st at base of ch-1, *ch 1, sk 4 ch, in next ch work [tr, (ch 2, tr) 4x](Fan completed), ch 1, sk 4 ch, sc in next ch, rep from * to last 5 ch, ch 1, sk 4 ch, in last ch work (tr, ch 2) twice, tr in last ch, turn (5 full fans, one half fan)

Rep Rows 2-5 of first half until second half of shawl measures approx. 30” from center back, ending with Row 2. Fasten off.

Chain Fringe:

Attach yarn at right corner of one short end of shawl, *ch 11, sl st in 2nd ch from hk and in ea of next 9 ch, sl st in next 4 ch on end of shawl, rep from * across, ending with sl st in last st. Fasten off.

Repeat chain fringe at other short end of shawl. Fasten off and weave in all tails.

Finishing:

If necessary, lightly block shawl by dampening it with cool to lukewarm water, then roll in towel to absorb excess moisture. Spread dry towels out on a flat space, lay shawl on top of towel and smooth out lace pattern. Cover with more towels and leave to dry.
