Materials

7 mm / US 10 1/2 knitting needles.
Knitznpurlz t-shirt yarn: 175 m London Blue and 70 m wine color.
Tapestry needle to weave in the ends. I love this set as it has different eye sizes for different yarn thickness and it comes in a small tube which is very convenient so I don’t lose them.
T pins for blocking

Abbreviations

st = stitch
k = knit
P = purl
Stockinette stitch = knit on the right side and purl on the wrong side of the mat
Garter stitch = knit on both sides of the project
My gauge in garter stitch is 11 st by 22 rows for a 10 cm / 4″ square.

Size

The knit bath mat is 40 cm (15 3/4″) wide and 70 cm (27 1/2″) long. This is a very flexible pattern. You can adapt the width by adding/removing stitches. And for the length, just add/remove rows.

The Actual Chunky Knit Rug Pattern

On 7 mm / US 10 1/2 knitting needles, cast on 44 st in blue yarn.

Knit in garter stitch (knit on both sides) for 10 cm (4″).
Switch to red yarn. Knit in stockinette stitch (alternate knit and purl rows) for 8 cm (3 1/4″). Finish on a purl row.
Switch back to blue yarn and knit 13 cm (5″) in garter stitch.
Then switch to red yarn and knit 6 cm (2 1/4″) in stockinette stitch. Finish with a purl row.

Be careful while blocking as some of the colors might bleed out. To avoid issues, soak your knit bath mat in mild water with some white vinegar for 15 minutes. Rinse thoroughly and block.

If, like me, you don’t have a proper blocking mat, no problem, you can make one yourself. You just need a clean towel and some foam or anything soft you can prick into and that doesn’t get damaged by water (so no cardboard). You can even use a mattress or your couch. Pin the towel stretched to the foam (not too loose) and you’re good to go. For the pins, it is harder to go homemade. I tried to use my husband’s nails. That was a very bad idea. They rusted and destroyed my project. For a few bucks, you can get nice stainless steel T pins which you can easily reuse for each project.
