​Piyumi's Crossbody Crochet Bag

The size of the 2 pieces listed in note section in each part.

(C1) 4-medium/worsted /100% acrylic black color yarn (Approx: 200 yards)

(C2) 2-fine/ sport / 100% acrylic gray color (Approx: 30 yards)

5mm crochet hook (for body of the bag)

4mm crochet hook (for the lace piece)

Piece of fabric (Approx: 9 x 13) for lining

Thread and needle

Zipper 9” long.

Stitch markers.

ch = chain

st = stith

sc= single crochet

hdc = half double crochet

dc = double crochet

Side-dc = dc in side sts of the crochet piece.

beg = beginning

sl st = slip stitch

sk = skip

(C1) = color 1

(C2) = color 2

Special stitches

v-st = (dc,ch 3,dc) in indicated st.

Shell stitch = 7 dc in indicated st.

My bag measurements are 8″ wide and 6″ height.

This bag has 2 parts to crochet. The body of the bag and a piece of lace (to attach to the flap).

Both pieces (lace and the body of the bag) should have the same width.

I suggest you make the lace piece first before starting to crochet body of the bag. Due to the differences of yarns we are using and the way of crocheting style we do, the size of the lace piece might be slightly different from mine. And this is the main and outstanding part of this bag so it wants to be perfect first of all.

To get a same width to the lace piece, I crocheted edge with single crochet on 3 sides except for the edge of the last row of the piece of lace.

After finished lace piece, keep it aside and start to crochet body of the bag part matching with the size of the width of your lace piece.

I also added a lining to the bag. You can skip this if you don’t need.

beg ch count as st in this part.

Multiple of 5+1

Using 4mm crochet hook, crochet ch 41 with (C2).

Row 1: v-st in 8th (count as ch 3, dc, ch 1) ch from the hook, *ch 1, sk next ch 4, v-st in next ch; repeat * to across until last ch 3 remain, (don’t forget to crochet ch 1 after the last v-st) dc in last ch, turn. (7 v-sts)

Row 2: ch 3, shell in each ch-3 sp of the v-st across, dc in beg ch 3 top, turn. (7 shells)

Row 3: ch 4 (count as dc and ch 1), *v-st in 4th dc of the shell, ch 1; repeat * to across, (do not forget to crochet ch 1 after the last v-st) dc in beg ch 3 top, turn. (7 v-sts)

Row 4 to 12: repeat rows 2 and 3. Do not fasten off or cut the yarn if you going to make edging.

Edging (Compare with the width of your finished body of the bag first. you can skip the edging part if you get the right width for the lace piece.)

Except the edge of the last row, work on 3 sides (2 sides and foundation chains side).

(On 2 sides of the piece) 3 sc in each side-dc sts until corner.

5 sc in each corner.

5 sc in each ch-4 sp of foundation chains.

Body of the bag

beg ch does not count as st in this part.

Using 5mm crochet hook, crochet ch 62 with (C1).

Row 1: sc in second ch from the hook, sc in each st across, turn. (61 sts)

Row 2 to 18: ch 1, hdc in first st and each of next st across, turn. (61 sts)

Compare with the width of your lace piece and crochet more or fewer rows.

Last row: ch 1, sc in first st and each of next st across, turn. (61 sts) Fasten off and weave the ends. (See finishing and assembly part below)

Join the lace part to one of the top edges of the bag piece. (see the photo below)

Using tapestry needle and same yarn you used for the lace piece, attach the lace piece to one of the top edges of the bag. Add pins first. I care to run the tapestry needle through the crochet stitches of the body of the bag and not to come needle out from the back side. Fasten off and weave the ends.

Joining two sides together

Lay the piece of the body of the bag long side up (the side of the lace part attached should be up and). Bring the bottom short edge up until reaching your desired height for the bag. This bag tall 6″. It means I folded bottom edge 6″ up. Make sure to check out both sides have the right height for the purse.

Attach stitch markers to hold the two pieces together or add pins until joining finished (now you are working on the wrong side of the bag. The right side with the lace part should be inside). I used slip stitch to join both sides but if you want, you can seam sides with the yarns and tapestry needle (to see you clearly I didn’t use the same color for the slip stitch for the photos below). Fasten off and weave the ends. Turn the right side out.

Strap

(C1) ch 100, dc in 4th ch from the hook, dc in each st across. Fasten off and weave the ends. Sew the two ends of strap to the corner sides of the inside bag.

Attaching zipper and lining to the bag

Cut the lining piece to match with the measurements of the bag 8″ x 6″ leaving extra 0.5″ for seam allowances. And fold the fabric in half (right side facing inside) and sew the sides. Attach the zipper to the lining opening. Turn the right side out of the lining. And the wrong side out of the crochet bag. Insert the crochet bag into the lining. Add pins first and sew with the backstitch. After sewing lining to the bag, turn inside out of the bag.
