You’ll need:

100% acrylic 4-ply worsted weight yarn (3.5 oz. skeins): Off White, Light Periwinkle, Periwinkle, and Soft Navy; and (3 oz. skeins): Ombre Blues;

Crochet hook 6;

Tapestry needle.

Size: 60 x 60 in.

Stitches control: 2 rnds of granny square = 2 3/8-in. square; 1 prepared granny square = 6 7/8-in. square; (3 dc, ch 1) = 1 in.

Instructions

Granny Square (make 28):

Make 12 squares of Off White, 8 of Light Periwinkle, and 8 of Periwinkle. These 28 squares are the "center square" of the 28 "prepared squares". The "side squares" and "corner squares" of the prepared squares are joined as they are being made, so do not make them ahead of time.

With sl st on hook ch 5 with appropriate color, join with sl st to first ch to form a ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 3, 2 dc in ring, ch 2, (3 dc in ring, ch 2) three times, join to top of first ch 3 with sl st, sl st in each of next 2 dc, sl st into ch 2 sp.
Rnd 2: Ch 3, 2 dc in same sp, (first half of beg corner), ch 2, 3 dc in same sp, ch 1, *(3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 1) in next sp; rep from * 2 more times, join to top of first ch 3, ch 1, fasten off.

Stop here and measure work. Piece should measure 2 3/8-in. square. If measurement is other than listed above please follow instructions under Gauge.

Make 8 prepared granny squares having an Off White center, Periwinkle sides and Ombre corners; make 4 having an Off White center, Ombre sides and Periwinkle corners; make 8 having a Periwinkle center, Off White sides and Ombre corners; make 8 having a Light Periwinkle center, Off White sides and Light Ombre corners.

Note: When making the squares with Light Ombre corners use the Ombre yarn by cutting off the dark and royal blue portions of the yarn, and work only with the lighter colors of ombre and Off White. You can leave up to 3-in. of the darker yarn on each end for a tail.

Prepared Granny Square: With each center square of designated color determine colors for corner squares and side squares.

Side Squares: *With proper color yarn work Rnd 1, then work first half of beg corner of Rnd 2, holding the center square and current square back to back (but having current square in front) sc in a corner ch 2 sp of center square, (drop center square), work 3 dc in same ch 2 sp of current square, with center square back to back with current square sc in ch 1 sp of center square, (drop center square), work first half of next corner of current square, with center square back to back with current square sc in ch 2 corner sp of center square, (drop center square), work 3 dc in same ch 2 sp of current square, ch 1, finish Rnd 2 of current square; rep from * on other 3 sides of center square. 

Stop here and measure work. Piece should measure 6 7/8-in. x 6 7/8-in. across center.

Corner Squares

**With proper color yarn work Rnd 1, then work first half of beg corner of Rnd 2, holding a side square back to back with current square, sc in corner sp of side square, (drop side square), work 3 dc in same sp of current square, with same side square back to back with current square sc in ch 1 sp of the side square, (drop side square), work first half of next corner of current square, with same side square back to back with current square sc in ch 2 corner sp of the side square, sc in ch 2 sp of the center square and sc in ch 2 corner sp of the next side square, (if necessary, remove hook from lp and reestablish your place on the current square before continuing, with lp on book and front side of current square facing) finish 2nd half of corner on current square, with 2nd side square back to back with current square sc in ch 1 sp of the side square, work first half of next corner of current square, with 2nd side square back to back with current square sc in ch 2 sp of the side square, finish 2nd half of corner on current square, finish other 2 sides of Rnd 2 of current square; rep from ** for other 3 corner squares. 

Weave in all ends in like colored sts.

Make all prepared squares before starting the Center Star.

Center Star (make one):

With sl st on hook and Off White ch 5, sl st in first ch to form a ring.

From the prepared squares take 4 with Off White center, Periwinkle sides and Ombre corners, and 4 with Off White center, Ombre sides and Periwinkle corners. These 8 prepared squares will be joined bet the 8 spokes of the Center Star alternating colors. Before joining, sc on 2 of the 4 sides of each square as follows:

[With sl st on hook and holding a prepared granny square with right side facing, join Navy with a sc in any corner ch 2 sp, *sc in each dc and ch 1 sp across the 3 small squares to next corner -- working only 1 sc in each joining seam and one sc in last corner ch 2 sp-25 sc*; work 1 more sc in same corner, rep from * to * once more-50 sc total], ch 1, fasten off. Wedge-Shaped Piece: Make 8 (one at a time, as they are joined):
With sl st on hook and using Navy ch 4, sl st in first ch to form a ring.

Row 1: Ch 3, (dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in ring, ch 3 -- (always counts as first dc of next row, so do not work another st into the first st of each row), turn.
Row 2: Dc in next dc, (dc, ch 1, dc) in ch 1 sp, dc in each of next 2 sts, ch 3, turn.
Row 3: Dc in each of next 2 dc, dc in ch 1 sp, ch l, dc in each of next 3 sts, ch 3, turn.
Row 4: Dc in each of next 2 dc, (dc, ch 1, dc) in ch 1 sp, dc in each of next 4 sts, ch 3, turn.
Row 5: Dc in each of next 4 dc, ch 1, dc in ch 1 sp, dc in each of next 4 sts, ch 3, turn.

Row 13 (right side): Dc in each of next 10 dc, ch 1, dc in ch 1 sp, dc in each of next 10 sts, do not turn or fasten off. Stop here and measure work. Piece should measure 5 1/4-in. across widest part and 7-in. along both sides. If measurement is other than listed above please follow instructions under Gauge.

From the prepared squares take 8 with Periwinkle center, Off White sides and Ombre corners, and 8 with Light Periwinkle center, Off White sides and Light Ombre corners. These 16 squares will be joined around the 8 sides of the Big Star alternating 2 of same color in every other side and having one Navy wedge bet each 2 squares of like Color.

Joining Squares to Wedges:
Holding prepared granny square and wedge wrong sides tog and *having wedge in front: with lp on hook sc in any ch 2 corner sp of square, ch 3, insert hook through next row of wedge (bet first and second dc) and into next ch sp of square, draw up a lp and finish a sc, ch 2, continue along wedge working a sc into each ch sp on square (9 sc total), and using ch 2's or ch 3's along wedge (as necessary), having side of wedge match up with side of square perfectly*, and ending last sc in ch 4 ring of wedge and last ch 2 sp of last square, sl st in ring. Holding the other matching square to the wedge with wrong sides facing rep bet *'s across, ch 1, fasten off. Makes one prepared wedge. Work other 7 wedges, joining to 2 matching squares as before. 

These 8 prepared wedges will be added to the Big Star alternating colors. Before crocheting them tog tie all prepared wedges in place around the outside edge of Big Star. Using the tapestry needle and contrasting yarn, match the center ch 1 (in Row 13 of a Navy wedge) to center dc (bottom of "V") of a side of the Star, and (ch 2) corners of squares to (ch 2) Points of Star. Tie yarn in place at these 3 points securely (but loosely, so contrasting yarn can be cut off after wedges are all attached).

Rnd 12 of Big Star: With sl st on hook and using Navy, join with sl st to any ch 2 corner sp of a Point, [holding a side of the Star and a prepared wedge back to back (with the Star in front) insert hook into corresponding ch 2 corner sp of prepared wedge, *draw up a lp and work a sc, ch 3, insert hook in next sp on Star and in either the next ch sp of a square or under the top lps of a corresponding dc (whatever keeps the work neat and the edges even), rep from * across to middle of Navy wedge ending with a sc (10 sc), ch 1, insert hook in center dc (bottom of "V" of Star) and ch 1 sp of Navy wedge, draw up a lp and finish the sc, ch 1, insert hook in next ch sp of Star and corresponding dc of wedge, rep from first * across to next Point ending with a sc -- total of 21 sc evenly space, sl st in ch 2 Point of Star and join next prepared wedge] by repeating bet [ ] around, ending sl st in first sl st, do not fasten off Navy.

Edging

With Navy lp on hook sc around all 8 prepared wedges as follows: sc in next ch 2 corner sp, [*sc in each dc, each ch sp and each joining to corner, work a sc in ch 2 corner sp -- 29 sc*; ch 1, work another sc in same sp, rep bet *'s to next point of Navy wedge, sc in ring of point, sc in ch 2 sp of next square, rep bet *'s once, ch 1, work another sc in same sp, rep bet *'s again, ch 1 at Point of Star, sc in ch 2 corner of next square], rep bet [ ] around having 29 sc across each side of a prepared square (but not counting the ch 1 at Point of Star or the sc in ring of point of Navy wedge).

Half Granny Square

Make 4 (one at a titne, as they are joined):

With sl st on hook and using Off White ch 4, sl st in first ch to form a ring.

Row 1: Ch 4, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 1, dc) in ring, ch 4 [stands for (dc, ch 1) throughout], turn.
Row 2: 3 dc in ch 1 sp, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in ch 2 sp, ch 1, in next ch 1 sp work (3 dc, ch 1, dc) finishing last step of last dc with Light Periwinkle, ch 4, turn, fasten off Off White.
Row 3: (3 dc in next ch 1 sp, ch 1) twice, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch 2 sp, (ch 1, 3 dc in next ch 1 sp) twice, (ch 1, dc) in same sp as last 3 dc, ch 4, turn.
Row 4: (3 dc in next ch 1 sp, ch 1) 3 times, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch 2 sp, (ch 1, 3 dc in next ch 1 sp) 3 times, (ch 1, dc) in same ch 1 sp as last 3 dc, finishing last step of last dc with Periwinkle, ch 4, turn, fasten off Light Periwinkle.
Row 5: (3 dc in next ch 1 sp, ch 1) 4 times, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch 2 sp, (ch 1, 3 dc in next ch 1 sp) 4 times, (ch 1, dc) in same sp as last 3 dc, ch 4, turn.
Row 6 (right side): (3 dc in next ch 1 sp, ch 1) 5 times, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch 2 sp, (ch 1, 3 dc in next ch 1 sp) 5 times, (ch 1, dc) in same sp as last 3 dc, ch 1, fasten off. Do not turn. Stop here and measure work: piece should measure 4 1/4-in. high (through center) x 8-in. long at bottom and 5 1/2-in. long on each of 2 sides. Row 7: Join the half square in middle of each side of afghan as follows: with sl st on hook and half square right side up, join Navy in ch 4 sp of beg ch 4 with sl st (on other end of piece), ch 2. Holding the half square in place back to back against one of the squares to which it will be joined (with half square in front), sl st in corner sc of full square, 2 dc in same ch sp of half square, *sk 3 sc of full square, sc in next sc, work 3 dc in next ch 1 sp of half square; rep from * 5 more times to point, sk 3 sc of full square, sc in top sc of current full square, sc in top sc of next full square, 3 dc in same sp of half square, rep from first * 6 more times to bottom, sk 3 sc of full square, sc in next sc, ch 1, fasten off. Weave in ends. Rep for other 3 half squares.

Corners

To determine where to start: hold afghan with front side facing having a Navy wedge in your left hand and (skipping only 1 full square) having a half square in your right hand.

Row 1 (right side): With sl st on hook join Navy with a sl st in the 2nd sc to the right of the tip of the wedge, sk 1 sc and the tip of the wedge, ch 1, *dc in each of next 3 sc, ch 1, sk 1 sc*, rep bet *'s 6 more times, [3 dc in first corner sc, ch 2, 3 dc in second corner sc, ch 1, sk 1 sc], rep bet *'s 5 times, dc in each of next 3 sc, sk 4 sc of square, tr in ch 1 sp (inside corner), sk 4 sc of next square, rep bet *'s 6 times, rep bet [ ] once, rep bet *'s 7 times, sk tip of wedge and 1 sc of next full square, sl st in next sc, ch 2, sk 2 sc, sl st in next sc, ch 1 loosely, turn.

Border

*Hdc into the ch 1 sp of corner of full square, sc across bottom of half square working (3 sc in next ch sp and 2 sc in next ch sp) across for a total of 38 sc, hdc into the ch 1 sp of corner of next full square, [(3 dc, ch 1) in each sp across] to next ch 2 corner sp, in corner work (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc), ch 1, rep bet [ ] to next half square; rep from * around, join with sl st to first hdc, ch 1, fasten off. Weave in ends.

Blocking

If necessary, block afghan as follows: Using rustproof pins (and a padded surface that won't be disturbed for at least 24 hours) pin edges in place with afghan face up; dampen afghan evenly and thoroughly with water from a spray bottle. Allow to dry completely without using an iron. If article is removed before totally dry (or is not saturated thoroughly enough) it may have to be reblocked.
