Scarf width approximately 7 inches X 67 inches length.

Gauge

Approximately 10 sts per 4 inches and 4 rows per 3 inches worked in dc. Note: You can substitute any yarn and hook for this stitch pattern – just remember when you substitute, if your gauge is different, the finished size, and amount of yarn used will also be different.

Abbreviations (US Terminology)

  • ch(s) – chain(s)
  • dc – double crochet
  • g – grams
  • m – meters
  • oz – ounces
  • R – row
  • rem – remaining
  • rep – repeat
  • RS – right side
  • sc – single crochet
  • sk – skip/skipped
  • st/sts – stitch/stitches
  • tr – treble crochet
  • yds – yards

* to ** – Repeat the instructions between the asterisks the number of times indicated. This repeat will contain multiple instructions.

[ ] – at the end of the row – the total number of stitches.

( ) – important notes AND sets of stitches to be worked within one stitch or space.

Notes

  • Stitch multiple of 2+1 (+1 for the turning ch).
  • Initial ch 1 does not count as a stitch.
  • Initial ch 3 counts as 1 dc.
  • Push the tr stitches to the RS of your project.

I substituted an alternate starting double crochet stitch for the initial ch 3 in my project. If you’d like to try this stitch, view the tutorial at the end of the pattern. When working into the foundation chain, I prefer working into the back bar (back bump) of the chain. You can work under the back loop only if you prefer.

To make the scarf longer, work more rows. To make it wider, chain more stitches using the stitch multiple.

Honey Spiced Scarf Crochet Pattern

This bulky crochet scarf is crocheted widthwise in rows. Use your 7 mm crochet hook (or size required for gauge):

  1. R1: RS: Ch 18, sk the first ch 1 sc in each rem ch across, turn. [17 sc]
  2. R2: Ch 1, 1 sc in the first st. *1 tr in the next st, 1 sc in the next st**. Work from * to ** across, turn. [9 sc, 8 tr]
  3. R3: Ch 1, 1 sc in each st across, turn. [17 sc]
  4. R4-R7: Rep R2 and R3
  5. R8-R12: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in each st across, turn. [17 dc]
  6. R13: Ch 1, 1 sc in each st across, turn. [17 sc]
  7. R14: Ch 1, 1 sc in the first st. *1 tr in the next st, 1 sc in the next st**. Work from * to ** across, turn. [9 sc, 8 tr]
  8. R15: Ch 1, 1 sc in each st across, turn. [17 sc]
  9. R16: Ch 1, 1 sc in the first st. *1 tr in the next st, 1 sc in the next st**. Work from * to ** across, turn. [9 sc, 8 tr]
  10. R17: Ch 1, 1 sc in each st across, turn. [17 sc]
  11. R18-R22: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 1 dc in each st across, turn. [17 dc]
  12. R23: Ch 1, 1 sc in each st across, turn. [17 sc]
  13. R24-R123: Rep R14-R23
  14. R124-R129: Rep R14-R15

Finishing Instructions

Finish off and weave in your ends. The Honey Spiced Scarf benefits from a little soak and blocking. I used Soak Wash (Celebration) for my scarf. Just 1 tsp in a gallon of water, let it soak for 15 minutes, squeeze the excess water out (roll it up in a towel to do this), and then block it with a few stainless steel pins on a blocking board. It relaxed the fabric, making it super soft to the touch, and it smells terrific! The scarf is ready to give as a gift.

Honey Spiced Scarf Row by Row Photo Tutorial

Below you will find images for the first 17 rows of the project. All the other rows are the same as these.

Things to remember:

  • Odd-numbered rows face the right side (RS).
  • After crocheting the treble stitches in an even-numbered row, pop them through to the RS of the project. They usually do this on their own, but occasionally you will have one that does not cooperate, and you must nudge it to the right side before continuing onto the next row.
  • Make the single crochet stitches that follow the treble crochet stitches a normal size – do not let the treble stitch pull the single crochet taller than it would be normally. If the single crochet stitches are too loose, your treble stitches will not create the little bumps of texture you want.

Alternate Starting Double Crochet Stitch Tutorial

I tried a new technique to start my rows of double crochet for this project. You can chain 3 to start, as written in the pattern, or even chain 2 and then work your first double crochet in the very first stitch (just remember not to work into that chain 2, or you’ll add stitches for each row of double crochet you work).

This Alternate Start is easy and removes the gap at the beginning of the row, making it less bulky than the chain 2 and double crochet in the first stitch. If you’d like to try it, follow these steps:

  1. Chain 1
  2. Insert your hook under the top 2 loops of the chain 1
  3. Yarn over
  4. Pull up 1 loop
  5. Insert your hook into the first stitch of the row, yarn over
  6. Pull up 1 loop
  7. Yarn over and pull through 2 loops
  8. Yarn over and pull through the remaining 2 loops

You can use any yarn and hook for this project! With the yarn and hook you’ve chosen, chain until you reach the desired width; or chain until your width measures 7 inches.

Check that your chain number can be divided evenly by 2 (to match the stitch multiple). Follow the pattern as written.

Continue crocheting until your project reaches the desired length or approximately 67 inches long.

Note: If making a different length project, remember to add one extra set of textured stitches (the section repeat of R14 with the treble stitches and R15 with the single crochet stitches) before finishing off. The last section of the pattern has 3 repeats of R14 and R15.

Finish off and weave in your ends.
