Materials Needed

  • Sport weight/category 2 yarn in 2 colours - main colour (A) approximately 110 meters and a complementing colour (B) approximately 35 meters
  • 3.5 mm crochet hook
  • 2 beads with large holes
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors

Size of Pouch

About 8.5 inches high and 8.5 inches wide

Stitches and Abbreviations Used

  • ** - work instructions within asterisks as many times as instructed
  • [ ] - work instructions within brackets as a set as many times as instructed
  • ch - chain
  • st/sts - stitch/stitches
  • sl st - slip stitch
  • sc - single crochet (UK - double crochet)
  • dc - double crochet (UK - treble)
  • 2-dc cluster - double crochet 2 sts worked together in the same st/space

Instructions

Round 1

Using color A, ch 40, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in rest of the chs except the last, 3 sc in last ch, sc in next 37 ch on the other side, 2 sc in next ch. Join with a sl st to the 1st sc (80 sc).

Round 2

Pull color B through the loop, ch 1, sc in same st, **ch 5, skip 3 sts, sc in next st**. Repeat from ** to ** around. Join with a sl st to the 1st sc.

Round 3

Pull color A through the loop, ch 2, dc in same st (counts as 2-dc cluster), ch 3, 2-dc cluster in same st, sc in next ch-5 space, **[2-dc cluster, ch 3, 2-dc cluster] in next sc, sc in ch-5 space**. Repeat from ** to ** around. After the last sc, work sl st in the 1st st.

Round 4

Sl st in next ch-1 space, pull color B through the loop, ch 1, sc in same space, **ch 5, sc in next ch-3 space**. Repeat from ** to ** around. Join with a sl st to 1st sc.

Repeat rounds 3 and 4 ten more times.

Edging

Pull color A through the loop, sc in same st, **into the next ch-5 space work [sc, ch 3, sc, ch 5, sc, ch 3, sc], sc in next sc**. Repeat from ** to ** around. Join with sl st in 1st sc. Cut off yarn and weave in all the loose ends.

Drawstrings (Make 2)

To make the drawstrings using color B, ch 95. Cut off yarn.

Finishing Touches

Starting at one end, insert a drawstring and take it all the way around the circumference of the bag, weaving it in and out of spaces in the border and bring it to the same space where you started. Insert the other string through a space at the other end and bring it to the starting point. Hold both ends of a drawstring together and insert a bead through both ends. Make a knot below the bead and cut off the excess yarn at the ends. Repeat for the other string.
