Crochet Basic Mittens

Materials Needed

1 Skein, 3.5 oz Red Heart Super Saver worsted weight yarn. Cherry Red was used in the example.
Size H/8 or 5mm aluminum crochet hook.
Yarn Needle.

Yarn Thickness 4mm
Gauge: 4sc=1" & 3sc rows and 2hdc rows = 1.5"
Finished Size: Fits woman Medium 4" across palm 10" long
Skill Level: Intermediate

Special Stitches Used:
hdc decrease (hdec) Yo, insert hook in next st, draw up a lp, draw through 2 lps on hook, insert hook in next st, draw up a lp, yo and draw through all 3 lps on hook.

sc decrease (sdec) Insert hook in next st, draw up a lp, insert hook in next st, draw up a lp and draw through all 3lps on hook.

Instructions
Cuff
ROW 1: Ch13. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch1, turn.

ROW 2-29: In back lp only, Sc in each st across. Ch1, turn.

Close cuff: Fold the cuff in half so that row 1 lines up with row 29, making sure the starting end is on the front right hand side. Join row 1 to row 29 by working a slst in each st across.

Palm
RND 1: Ch1. Work 1 sc in each row around making sure you end with a total of 30 stitches. You may need to add one more stitch to make a total of 30. Join w/slst to first sc.

RND 2: Ch2. Hdc in same st as slst. Work 1 hdc in each of the next 26 sc. 2hdc in next st. Hdc in each of the last 2 sc. Join w/slst to top of ch2.

RND 3: Ch1. 2sc in next st. Sc in each of the next 26 sts. 2sc in next st. Sc in each of the next 3 sts. Join w/slst to ch1.

RND 4: Ch2. Hdc in next st. 2 hdc in next st. Hdc in each of the next 26 sts. 2hdc in next st. Hdc in each of the next 4 sts. Join w/slst to top of ch2.

RND 5: Ch1. Sc in each of the next 3 sts. 2sc in next st. Sc in each of the next 26 sts. 2sc in next st. Sc in each of the next 4 sts. Join w/slst to ch1.

RND 6: Ch2. Hdc in each of the next 4 sts. 2hdc in next st. Hdc in each of the next 26 sts. 2hdc in next st. Hdc in each of the next 5 sts. Join w/slst to top of ch2.

Thumb
RND 7: Ch1. Sc in each of the next 5 sts. Sk next 28 sts. Sc in each of the next 6 sts. Join w/slst to ch1.

RND 8: Ch2. Hdc in each st around. Join w/slst to top of ch2.

RND 9: Ch1. Sc in each st around. Join w/slst to ch1.

RND 10: Ch2. 1hdec. *Hdc in next st. 1 hdec. Rep from * around. Join w/slst to top of ch2.

RND 11: Ch1. 1sdec. *Sc in next st. 1sdec. Rep from * around. Join w/slst to ch1. Fasten off close tip of thumb, then weave ends into work.

Palm cont...
Place mitten in front of you so the thumb is on the right side.
Rejoin yarn to rnd 6 in the same st as the last st on the side facing you.
RND 1: Ch1. Sc in each of the next 29 sts. Sc in next st (which has a sc in it for the thumb). Sc in next sp in base of thumb. Join w/slst to ch1. (31 sts.)

RND 2: Ch2. Hdc in each st around. Join w/slst to top of ch2.
RND 3: Ch1. Sc in each st around. Join w/slst to ch1.
RND 4: Ch2. Hdc in each st around. Join w/slst to top of ch2.
RND 5: Ch1. Sc in each st around. Join w/slst to ch1.
RND 6: Ch2. Hdc in each st around. Join w/slst to top of ch2.
RND 7: Ch1. Sc in each st around. Join w/slst to ch1.
RND 8: Ch2. Hdc in each st around. Join w/slst to top of ch2.
RND 9: Ch1. Sc in each st around. Join w/slst to ch1.
RND 10: Ch2. Hdc in each of the next 14 sts. 1hdec. Hdc in each of the next 14 sts. Join w/slst to top of ch2.

RND 11: Ch1. 1Sdec. Sc in each of the next 9 sts. 1Sdec. Sc in each of the next 2 sts. 1Sdec. Sc in each of the next 9 sts. 1sdec. Sc in next st. Join w/slst to ch1.

RND 12: Ch2. 1hdec. Hdc in each of the next 7 sts. 1Hdec. Hdc in each of the next 2 sts. 1hdec. Hdc in each of the next 7 sts. 1hdec. Hdc in next st. Join w/slst to top of ch2.

RND 13: Ch1. 1Sdec. Sc in each of the next 5 sts. 1sdec. Sc in each of the next 2 sts. 1sdec. Sc in each of the next 5 sts. 1sdec. Sc in next st. Join w/slst to ch1.

RND 14: Ch2. 1hdec. Hdc in each of the next 3 sts. 1hdec. Hdc in each of the next 2 sts. 1hdec. Hdc in each of the next 3 sts. 1hdec. Hdc in next st. Join w/slst to top of ch2.

RND 15: Ch1. 1Sdec. Sc in each of the next 5 sts. 1Sdec. Hdc in each of the next 4 sts. Join w/slst to ch1. Fasten off leaving an end about 12" long. Use yarn needle to sew up the opening closed. Turn inside out and sew the fingertips closed using an overcast stitch. Weave the ends in.
