3 colors worsted weight acrylic or cotton yarn (I used I Love this Cotton in Burnt Sienna (50g), White (50g), & Blue Denim (50g))
4.5 mm hook
yarn needle
scissors

ch – chain

sc – single crochet
sc2tog – single crochet 2 together

Written in US terms

ch 3 counts as dc in granny square (this is noted in the pattern)

ch 2 does not count as dc

ch 1 does not count as sc

The pattern is written in toddler size. For child size, use a 5.5 mm hook and follow the pattern.

For Teen/Small Adult, use 4.5 mm hook and add an additional granny square. For larger adult, use 5.5 mm hook and add an additional granny square.

Use your preferred joining method for sewing the squares.

Gauge: 3 round granny square = 3″ x 3″

PATRIOTIC BUCKET HAT CROCHET PATTERN

GRANNY SQUARES (make 5)

starting with RED, ch 4, join to first ch with sl st to make a loop

Round 1: ch 3, working in the ring, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, ch 2, join to first ch 3 with sl st (12 dc)

Round 2: Join WHITE to ch-2 space, (ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) all in ch-2 space, *(3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) all in next ch-2 space* repeat from * to * around, join to first ch 3 with sl st (24 dc)

If using the join-as-you-go method, remember to join in round 3

Round 3: Join BLUE to ch 2 space, (ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) all in ch-2 pace), 3 dc in between the 3 dc groups from previous row, *(3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) all in ch-2 space, dc in between the 3 dc groups from previous row* repeat from * to * around, join to first ch 3 with sl st (36 dc)

Fasten off. Weave in the ends.

To join, I used the join-as-you-go, but any joining method can be used.

Join squares to make a headband shape.

Weave in the ends.

Join with BLUE to the right-most stitch of one of the squares.

Round 1: ch 1, *dc in 9 stitches across to the corner ch-space, sc2tog (working one stitch in each of the ch-spaces where the squares are joined)* repeat from * to * around, join to first dc with sl st (50 dc)

Change to WHITE. Fasten off BLUE.

Round 2: ch 2, dc in each stitch around, join to first dc with sl st (50 dc)

Change to RED

Round 3: ch 2, *dc in 3 stitches, dc2tog* repeat from * to * around, join to first dc with sl st (40 dc)

Change to WHITE

Round 4: ch 2, *dc in 2 stitches, dc2tog* repeat from * to * around, join to first dc with sl st (30 dc)

Change to RED

Round 5: ch 2, *dc in 1 stitch, dc2tog* repeat from * to * around, join to first dc with sl st (20 dc)

Change to WHITE

Round 6: ch 2, dc2tog around, join to first dc with sl st (10 dc)

Leave a long end. Using a yarn needle, weave the long end in and out of the top loops of the last round, cinch the top closed. Weave in the ends.

Round 2: ch 2, *dc in 4 stitches, 2 dc in next* repeat from * to * around, join to first dc with sl st (66 dc)

Round 3: ch 2, dc in 2 stitches, 2 dc in next, *dc in 5 stitches, 2 dc in next* repeat from * to * around to last 3 stitches, dc in last 3 stitches, join to first dc with sl st (77 dc)

Change to WHITE

Round 4: ch 1, sc in first stitch, *fpdc in next, sc in next* repeat from * to * around, join to first sc with sl st (77)

Fasten off. Weave in the ends.
