Crochet Butterfly Hexagon Bag

Materials you will need:

  • Premier Yarns “Just Yarn Value” (worsted acrylic): Lemon (½ skein)
  • 5.5mm Crochet Hook -> I used Furls Crochet Hook
  • scissors
  • tapestry needle
  • plastic canvas for stability
  • 4 rings
  • Short leather bag straps
  • Butterflies Iron-on
  • Hot Glue

Gauge

6 sts x 3 rounds = 2 square inches

Size

13 x 13 inches (5 inches thick)

Stitches used in the pattern (US terms)

  • st/sts = stitch/stitches
  • ch = chain
  • sk = skip
  • sc = single crochet
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • sc thermal stitch
  • dc = double crochet
  • Mattress stitch

Pattern Notes

First, you’ll crochet 2 hexagons and then the one bag side before sewing all of the hexagons together and add the rings and straps at the end on the top.

2 Hexagons

R1: MR, 12 dc into ring

All first DC stitches are ATC

R2: *[1 dc,1 tr, 1 dc] in first st (this is the first corner), 1 dc inc in next st. Repeat from * 6 times. (30 sts), sl st

R3: 1 dc, *[1 dc, 1 tr, 1 dc] in next tr, 4 dc, Repeat from * 5 times. Then, [1 dc, 1 tr, 1 dc] in next tr, 3 dc. (42 sts)

R4: *1 dc in each st until you hit the corner tr stitch, place 1 dc, 1 tr, 1 dc] into the tr st, repeat from * all around

Repeat R4 five more times.

1 Bag Side

R1: ch 16, starting from the 2nd ch from the hook, 1 sc per ch (8 sts), sl st

R2: 1 sc thermal st per st, turn

Repeat R2 until each long rectangle fits around 5 sides of the hexagon (mine was 168 rows (counted both sides of the thermal crochet piece).

Butterfly Crochet Hexagon Bag Assembly

Sew the long rectangle (side of the bag to give it thickness and space inside) between the 2 hexagons (like the image above). Optionally add plastic canvas with lining on the inside.

Sew the 4 rings (2 on each side) to the bag and attach the leather purse straps (or crochet straps).

Finishing Touches

Optionally hot glue butterflies and flowers to the front of the bag.
